Heavy rainfall lash Mangaluru, Udupi; schools, colleges to remain closed on Wednesday

Karnataka's coastal districts on Tuesday witnessed heavy rainfall that caused waterlogging and uprooting of trees. Heavy rainfall had lashed parts of Mangalore and Udupi on Monday too. The schools and colleges will remain closed on Wednesday.

Earlier during the day, Karnataka government's disaster management department instructed all telecom and mobile service providers to maintain optimum connectivity in Mangaluru and Udupi in light of heavy rainfall.

"We have instructed all telecom and mobile service providers to maintain optimum connectivity in #Mangaluru and #Udupi in light of heavy rainfall, Quick response team formed by mobile service providers to restore connectivity immediately in case of disruption," Karnataka government's disaster management department said on Twitter.

They have also sent out assistance for those stuck during the thunder showers due to flood.

"For any assistance due to #heavy rains in #Mengaluru and #Udupi, kindly tweet using hastag #SOSMangaluru #SOSMangaluru indicating your location, our officers will get in touch with you," said another tweet.

According to reports, the heavy showers in the coastal areas of Karnataka are due to cyclone 'Mekunu'.

Earlier on May 26, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding cyclone 'Mekunu' for Maharashtra-Goa coast.

Mekunu is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and into a severe one in subsequent 24 hours.

Cyclone Mekunu neared the Arabian Peninsula on Friday as after causing damage in Oman.

At least 40 people were reported missing on Socotra while some were feared dead as flash floods washed away thousands of animals and cut power lines on the isle in the Arabian Sea.

Earlier, dust storms, followed by heavy rainfall and lightning, had hit various parts of the country causing loss of lives and properties in many states including Delhi, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
