Delhi High Court has extended the interim bail of Ajay Chautala, sentenced to 10 years prison term along with his father and former Haryana Chief Minister OP Chautala in a teachers recruitment scam case. Justice Siddharth Mridul extended till February two, the suspension of Ajay's sentence after CBI sought more time to furnish a report on his health from a medical board set up by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Meanwhile, senior advocate Hariharan informed the court that the medical board has examined his client and a report is awaited. The court on December 19, last year had asked the AIIMS Director to constitute a medical board and submit a report on the health condition of Chautala's son.
The board was to particularly provide an opinion on the advisability and necessity to keep him hospitalised. He has been on bail since August 12, 2013 on medical grounds. Ajay, his 78-year-old father and chief of Indian National Lok Dal, OP Chautala, and 53 others are serving varying jail terms in a teachers' recruitment scam of the year 2000.
OP Chautala had surrendered at Tihar jail on October 11 last year after the high court cancelled his interim bail on October 10 for flouting bail conditions by campaigning for his party, INLD.
On July 11 last year, the high court had reserved its verdict on the appeals of 55 convicts, including Chautala and his son Ajay. On January 22, 2013, a special CBI court convicted and sentenced the Chautalas and eight others to a 10-year jail term each for illegally recruiting 3,206 junior teachers.
Among other convicts, 44 were sentenced to four years in jail and one to a five-year jail term. All of them were held guilty of cheating, forgery, using fake documents as genuine, conspiracy under IPC and of abusing their official position under Prevention of Corruption Act.
