Scrapping of prohibition policy in Gujarat which bans sale and consumption of liquor could help the state register a much stronger growth, according to a group which is fighting for lifting the ban on liquor.

The group has not given any name to itself and work under the banner " We do not need prohibition in Gujarat".

Rajeev Patel, a young NRI who is leading the group said he would hold meetings across the state and try to 'educate' the people in support of its demand that there is no need for prohibition in Gujarat.

Patel said the reason behind Gandhiji's demand on banning sale of foreign liquor during freedom struggle was to stop liquor manufacturers from Britain earning huge profits and through which British government was also earning good amount of revenue. Gandhi wanted to attack this revenue stream for the British, Patel added.

Though MoUs for making investment worth Rs12 lakh crore have been signed during the Vibrant Gujarat meets, not many  companies would actually make the investment due to the prohibition policy, he said.

This group through social networking has registered 2,500 members from the country and abroad and would launch a signature campaign in support of their demands, Patel said.

Large number of people are visiting the exhibition on the subject organised in the city, Patel said.
