One person was killed and six others injured in a clash between two communities in a nearby village following a dispute over the conduct of 'jallikattu' and a local temple festival, police said today.

The incident occurred late last night in Perumalkoil Patti when people taking the bulls for jallikattu were attacked allegedly by armed members of another community after verbal duel over participation in the sport, they said.

Seven persons were injured in the clash and admitted to government hospital where a 45-year old man died, they said.

Nearly 300 people gathered in front of the hospital today demanding the arrest of those responsible for the death, triggering tension in the town.

Police said twenty-eight persons had been arrested in connection with the clash.

Armed police has been deployed in the village to monitor the situation which is under control now. "If necessary we will arrest more people in connection with the clash after an inquiry," police said.

Similar incidents had earlier taken place over the issue of organising the festivals which has been a problem between the two communities, they added.
