Sanjay Dutt applies for 30-day parole yet again

Actor Sanjay Dutt, serving a jail term for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, has applied for parole yet again.

Dutt, who is serving his time at Pune's Yerawada Jail,  made a 30-day parole plea before divisional commissioner Vikas Deshmukh in Pune, according to reports.

The actor was on parole six months ago in December 2014, as he wanted to bring in the New Year with his family. After his parole ended, he sought for a furlough but it was eventually denied by prison authorities.

In December 2014, the actor had overstayed his furlough by two days. It was said then that according to the prison manual, Dutt's remaining furlough days could be slashed by 10 days due to overstaying. For one day overstaying, a convict's five days are cut down in future furlough. In this case, Dutt's leave could be reduced by 10 days, police had then said.

The 55-year-old actor is undergoing the remainder of his five-year jail term for possessing illegal firearms that was part of a cache of weapons meant to be used during the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. These serial blasts killed over 250 people in Mumbai.

Since his surrender on May 16, 2013, he has been out of jail for 118 days on parole or furlough. This has been questioned by many as preferential treatment meted out to the actor.

According to reports, the latest parole plea will only be granted if the reasons stated are considered to be genuine and requisite clearances are made available from Mumbai Police.
