In a Sunday "encounter" in Chennai, the police fatally shot a 33-year-old man who was one of the defendants in the murder case of K Armstrong, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)'s Tamil Nadu unit. Authorities in Madhavaram state that K Thiruvengadam, one of the eleven defendants in the case, was brought to a location close to a lake in order to retrieve the weapons used in the politician's murder.

The officials said,“There, he (the accused) tried to attack police personnel with the recovered weapons and flee from the spot. He was injured in retaliatory firing and rushed to a hospital. However, he was declared brought dead."

Armstrong was killed on July 5 by six unidentified guys who hacked him to death close to his home in the Perambur neighbourhood of the city.
 
At her party leader's funeral, BSP leader and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati called for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). She said that the "real culprits" weren't the people who had been arrested.

Mayawati said at the burial,“The way he was killed, shows that there is nothing called law and order in Tamil Nadu. We have taken this incident very seriously and we will not sit quietly. I pray to God for strength to his family and supporters to bear the loss. To ensure action against the accused, the party cadre should come forward but at the same time, stay within the limits of law and show that the weaker section does not take the law into their hands."

Conversely, police have ruled out any political connection to the BSP member's slaying. Arun replaced Sandeep Rai Rathore as Chennai's Police Commissioner when the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government moved him in response to public outcry over the incident.
