Thousands of fish found dead in Yamuna

Thousands of fish have died apparently due to discharge of poisonous effluents in the Yamuna river near Mathura and Agra, raising concerns for the safety of nearby marine conservation projects.
    
The dead fish were spotted under a bridge on the Etawah-Gwalior road yesterday, district forest officer (DFO) Sudershan Singh said, adding this might have been due to the poisonous discharge from Mathura refinery and Agra city into the Yamuna.
    
He expressed concerns for the crocodile and dolphin conservation projects being undertaken at the Chambal river, about 25 km from here.
    
The Chambal river merges into the Yamuna which has raised possibilities of similar pollution of its water.
    
Samples of the water, which had reportedly turned poisonous due to discharge of effluents, have been sent for detailed testing, the DFO added.
