Though Jodhpur has grown as a city over the years, it’s the old part that retains more of this cool hue. There are various theories about why this colour has been favoured by the locals. Some say that it is the caste system has resulted in the houses of the Brahmins being painted in the timbre. Another belief is that blue helps keep the houses cool during the warmer months. Some also believe it prevents termites. Locals say that since it is associated with Lord Shiva, many of His devotees, who settled in the city, decided to opt for the tincture as a mark of respect to the God.

Whitewashed houses with blue doors and windows have become a known feature of Santorini. But it’s the azure dome picture that has come to be known as the hallmark of this island. Though Chefchaouen was founded in 1471, it was only in 1492 that the tradition of painting their houses in this shade began. According to locals, when the city received an influx of Jews, it was they who brought a tradition of doing so. Today, the custom continues, though mainly in the Old City. It is said that the since the colour reflects the sky, it reminds people of God. The practice has also found its way to cities in other countries like Safed in Israel. Today, Chefchaouen’s many lanes offer numerous Insta-worthy spots.

Most travellers who visit Tunisia make sure that they make a halt at this beautiful village, which is on top of a hill. The place gives a gorgeous view of the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Tunis has a great relaxed vibe. It sports white and blue hues that make it extremely photographic. French artist and musicologist Rodolph d’Erlanger is said to have introduced the theme in the 1920s when he lived there. Even today, the locality is home to many artists and art galleries. Around 113 km away from Malaga, in the autonomous province of Andalusia, is the village that is famous for its Smurf factor. Originally, it was a white village that got a major makeover in 2011 as part of the promotional strategy during the release of The Smurfs that summer. It became the first and only neighbourhood in the world to have characters from the movie. However, in a notice posted on the village’s council website, the mayor’s office recently announced that from August 15, all film-related activities would cease — although the village will remain blue.
