As Sawan, also called Sravana or Shravan, is approaching, Hindus are set to celebrate this special occasion. For Hindus, especially Shiva devotees, the festival of Shrawan Maas (month) is important. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Millions of Hindus in India and around the world observe Shravan maas as a time of celebration, fasting, and spiritual devotion. Sawan is traditionally celebrated in July and August, when India's monsoon season officially begins. The rain is regarded as a sign of life's renewal and a blessing from Lord Shiva.

The month of Sawan will begin on Monday, July 22nd. According to the Panchang, the first day of the Krishna Paksha of Sawan will start at 03:46 pm on Sunday, July 21st. Dr. Ganesh Mishra stated that this date will be valid until 01:11 pm on Monday, July 22nd. Based on sunrise calculations, Sawan will commence on July 22nd. It will start with Preeti Yoga and Shravan Nakshatra.

This year, there will be five Monday fasts or Somwar Vrats. Sawan's first Monday fast will be on 22 July. Sawan's fifth and final Monday fast will be on 19 August.

Sawan Somwar 2024: Dos and don'ts to keep in mind while fasting

Dos:

  • Honesty: Devotees should undertake the fast sincerely and with dedication throughout the entire month.
  • Nutritious intake: While fasting, it is essential to provide the body with necessary nutrients to avoid falling ill. Keeping nuts and fruits handy can help maintain a balanced diet.
  • Hydration: It is crucial to keep the body hydrated during fasting. Consuming fruit juices, water, and buttermilk throughout the day helps maintain proper hydration.
  • Rock salt: During Sawan, it is recommended to use rock salt instead of table salt for cooking. Spices such as cumin seeds, black pepper powder, red chili powder, and black peppercorns can be used.

Don'ts:

  • Onion and garlic: It is important to refrain from consuming onion, garlic, and foods prepared with them during Sawan. Additionally, certain foods like mustard oil, sesame oil, masoor dal (red lentils), and brinjal (eggplant) should be avoided.
  • Non-vegetarian meals: Consumption of meat, eggs, and alcohol is strictly prohibited during Sawan.
  • Packaged juices: Packaged juices often contain taste enhancers and preservatives, so it is advisable to avoid them and opt for freshly prepared juices instead.
