Joint pain, neck pain, spondylosis, arthritis and other orthopaedic problems are increasingly affecting the young. While the old try to live with them, the youth wage war with heavy medication as a weapon. However, choosing to combat the ailments with yoga is an emerging option.

Dr Ramesh Mantri, a senior orthopaedic surgeon in Nashik has devised a concept called Ortho Yoga Life (OYL), based on studies conducted on 500 patients.

His paper on Ortho Yoga Life, presented at the state conference of Maharashtra Orthopaedic Association, was appreciated. He also presented a paper on Yoga for Ortho Surgeons at international conferences in Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Mantri himself is an excellent example. He was suffering from severe knee pain six years ago. It was followed by a cardiac problem and then a problem of less blood supply to the brain. “I was hospitalised and was on heavy medication. I was fine as long as I took medicines for my joint pain. The moment I stopped, the pain was back,” he said.

His wife, Surekha, a yoga teacher, insisted that he try  yoga, and the relief was phenomenal.

Today, his day begins with a session of yogasanas and meditation. “This practice is easy, can be done at home, does not need any equipment and is very cheap,” points out the doctor, who is also associated with Yog Vidyadham.

The role of physiotherapy is important in orthopaedic problems but any passive exercise is of no use. One has to participate actively in the exercise. Yogasana is a way of exercise that is gradual. It is slow and steady and works on the stretch-and-relax mantra. Yoga is an isometric exercise where concentration of the mind is important.

However, giving up the medical treatment is not advisable. “Many orthopaedic  problems are degenerative and so patients need to take some basic medication,” he said.

OYL involves treatment including medication, injections or operation as is necessary, yoga, proper food and rest. This lifestyle is more suitable for young people.
