0.0 : Hello and a warm welcome to the opening ODI between Australia and Pakistan. The hosts dominated the Test series whitewashing the visitors. They have already announced their playing XI which means that Chris Lynn and Billy Stanlake make their ODI debuts. Pakistan will look to redeem themselves in the limited overs' format after a dismal performance in the Tests. They will also have one eye on the automatic qualification for WC 2019. The hosts are favourites but if the Men in Green step up, we are |

PAKISTAN PLAYING XI - Azhar Ali(C), Mohammad Rizwan(WK), Mohammad Hafeez, Wahab Riaz, Umar Akmal, Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim, Sharjeel Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Babar Azam, Hasan Ali. |
The players are out in the middle. A lefty-lefty combination to start off as DAVID WARNER and TRAVIS HEAD take their place in the centre. MOHAMMAD AMIR to begin the proceedings with the ball. |
0.1 : M Amir to D Warner, That is a lovely ball. Right on the spot. Full and around middle, swinging away, Warner covers the line but still gets squared up a touch. Manages to push it towards cover. |
0.2 : M Amir to D Warner, Ahh.... this is short and outside off, David sees the width, goes after it, slashing hard but misses. |
0.3 : M Amir to D Warner, Very good line and length, full and just around off, swinging away a touch, DW defends watchfully. |
0.4 : M Amir to D Warner, Landed around off, pushed towards mid off. |
0.5 : M Amir to D Warner, WIDE. Slips this down the leg side, Warner lets it go. Good carry through to Rizwan. |
M Amir to D Warner, Stays back in his crease and blocks. |
0.6 : M Amir to D Warner, Full and outside off, driven sweetly but straight to Imad Wasim at short cover. |
Interesting. MOHAMMAD HAFEEZ to bowl with the other new ball. |
1.1 : M Hafeez to T Head, A full toss on middle, Head goes leg side of the ball and drives it straight to cover. |
1.2 : M Hafeez to T Head, Another nice juicy full toss, driven powerfully down to deepish mid off for a single for the first run of the bat for Australia. |
1.3 : M Hafeez to D Warner, Short and around off, punched straight to cover. |
1.4 : M Hafeez to D Warner, Fuller and around leg, defended towards short mid-wicket. |
1.5 : M Hafeez to D Warner, Comes down the track, gets it on the full and drives it but straight to point. |
1.6 : M Hafeez to D Warner, Full and straight, driven back to the bowler. Warner stays on 0. |
2.1 : M Amir to T Head, Short and outside off, Head slashes this uppishly behind point for a single. |
2.2 : M Amir to D Warner, This one nips back in, Warner tucks it towards square leg. |
2.3 : M Amir to D Warner, Ooohhh.... this one comes back in as well, David looks to tuck it away but the ball goes off the inner half of the bat towards fine leg. Warner finally gets off the mark on his 12th ball. |
2.4 : M Amir to T Head, Outside off, steered behind point for a run. |
2.5 : M Amir to D Warner, A play and a miss. On a good length outside off, DW feels for it but the ball seams away and bounces to beat him. That is a good delivery. Came in with the angle then seamed away. Probably he needs to be a tad fuller. |
2.6 : M Amir to D Warner, Yes, that is the length. But what a poor choice of a shot. Warner is getting frustrated. Full and outside off, Warner tries a ridiculous flick across the line and misses the ball completely. So far was he from the ball that it was nowhere close to the edge. |
3.1 : M Hafeez to T Head, Short and outside off, gets away with it, cut straight to point. |
3.2 : M Hafeez to T Head, Full on middle, pushed back to the bowler. |
3.3 : M Hafeez to T Head, Comes forward a touch and pushes it past the bowler towards long on for a single. |
Mid off drops back for Warner now while mid on comes in. |
3.4 : M Hafeez to D Warner, FOUR! There he goes, making use of the change in field. Comes down the track, probably eyeing to go over mid on but the ball is on the pads and he whips it over mid-wicket. Not quite his proper flick shot, ends up dragging it but is hit well enough to clear the infield over mid-wicket and beat the fielder running after it from mid on. |
Another change in the field. Mid-wicket drops back now. Perhaps mid off might have come up. |
3.5 : M Hafeez to D Warner, Down the leg side, short as well, tucked towards short fine leg for a quick single. |
3.6 : M Hafeez to T Head, Full and outside off, defended watchfully towards cover. |
4.1 : M Amir to D Warner, That is a good single. Especially for Warner. He was continuously being troubled by Amir and will be happy to get off strike for some time. Full and outside off, Warner leans and drives it through the covers for a single. |
4.2 : M Amir to T Head, Wrote too soon. A length ball down the leg side, Head tucks it towards backward square leg for a run. His bottom hand came off the bat there. Warner is back on strike. |
4.3 : M Amir to D Warner, OUT! BOWLED! Warner is back on strike and now he is back in the pavillion! He was trying this in the last over and finally hits the mark. His celebrations show that. Amir was trying to angle the ball into Warner and then make it to go away off the seam. He landed this on leg stump, Warner tried to flick but missed it, playing all around it. Normally the ball should have gone past the leg stump with the angle but then the ball seamed away to hit the leg stump! Big, big wi |
Australian skipper STEVEN SMITH walks in at number 3, replacing Warner. |
4.4 : M Amir to S Smith, OUT! Another big wicket! Two in two for Amir as Smith goes for a duck! Really, a poor shot from the skipper. Full and wide outside off, swinging away, Smith is walking into his shot already, with his feet not that much to the pitch of the ball. Gets an outside edge which is calmly taken by Rizwan. That is the way he plays. When he gets it for a boundary through the covers it looks beautiful. Else, it looks ugly. Quack quack for the skipper. |
The crowd roars as the local lad CHRIS LYNN walks in at number 4, replacing his skipper. What a moment for the debutant. Coming in to face the hat-trick ball! |
4.5 : M Amir to C Lynn, Lovely delivery for a hat-trick ball. Full and swinging in, perhaps a shade too straight, Lynn flicks it towards short mid-wicket. |
4.6 : M Amir to C Lynn, The ball is way outside the off stump, easy leave for the batsman. What an over from Amir - 2 runs and 2 wickets from it. |
HASAN ALI comes into the attack. Mohammad Hafeez is off, as Warner is gone now. |
5.1 : H Ali to T Head, Full and outside off, driven wide of mid off for a single. |
5.2 : H Ali to C Lynn, Short and outside off, punched wide of mid off for a run. His first in ODIs. |
5.3 : H Ali to T Head, Down the leg side, tucked towards fine leg for one. |
5.4 : H Ali to C Lynn, FOUR RUNNING RUNS! Full and wide outside off, Lynn throws his bat at it and hits it uppishly, towards cover. Mohammad Hafeez dives to his right and gets a hand to it. Azhar Ali chases it from mid off and gets to the ball, tries to slide and push the ball back but slips. In the end, returns the throw but the batsmen run all four. |
5.5 : H Ali to C Lynn, Wide. |
H Ali to C Lynn, No run. |
5.6 : H Ali to C Lynn, No run. |
6.1 : M Amir to T Head, No run. |
6.2 : M Amir to T Head, Landed around off, angling in, punched firmly towards cover. |
6.3 : M Amir to T Head, Cramps him for room as Travis looks to tuck it to the leg side. The ball goes off the inside edge and drops near him but Head searches for the ball. Meanwhile, Lynn calls for the single and Amir runs to collect but Lynn comes in his way and Amir has to abort. |
6.4 : M Amir to C Lynn, That is a fabulous shot. On a length outside off, Lynn just stands and punches this through the covers. Umar Akmal chases it from point, slides and gets to the ball. The batsmen take two and then the third, on the throw. |
6.5 : M Amir to T Head, Short and outside off, punched straight to Akmal at cover-point. |
6.6 : M Amir to T Head, Good length, just around off, angling in, defended solidly. |
7.1 : H Ali to C Lynn, SIX! BOOM! There it comes! Cricket enthusiasts saw plenty of this in the Australian Domestic T20 League. Fractionally short and outside off, Lynn just swats it on the up over mid-wicket for a biggie! Does not bother to look where the ball went. Moves to 14 from 8 balls. |
7.2 : H Ali to C Lynn, Outside off, punched wide of mid off for a single. |
7.3 : H Ali to T Head, Full and outside off, pushed wide of mid off for a couple. Moves to 10 from 17 balls and this stand is worth 21 from 17 balls. |
7.4 : H Ali to T Head, Full on middle and leg, flicked straight to mid on. |
7.5 : H Ali to T Head, FOUR RUNNING RUNS! Anyone for Dog and the Bone? Funny piece of fielding. Full on middle, Head flicks it beautifully through mid-wicket. Mohammad Nawaz and Mohammad Hafeez chase it in pairs, with the former getting to the ball and sliding to pull it back in. Now here is where the game starts. Hafeez gets to the ball but then expects his junior to throw the ball. Nawaz, on the other hand, gives respect to his senior and lets him take it. So, in the end, it is like, who has to |
7.6 : H Ali to T Head, Full and outside off, driven straight to cover. |
WAHAB RIAZ to bowl now. |
8.1 : W Riaz to C Lynn, WIDE. A short ball around middle and leg, too high, Lynn ducks. Wided for height. |
W Riaz to C Lynn, A short ball around middle, Chris pulls this uppishly towards deep square leg. Mohammad Nawaz gets to the ball from deep mid-wicket, returns the throw slowly to the keeper who collides with Umar Akmal who was at the stumps for backing up the throw. The throw was anyways over the players and both were not happy with Nawaz. |
8.2 : W Riaz to T Head, FOUR! Short and outside off, Head stands tall and punches it through the covers for a boundary! |
8.3 : W Riaz to T Head, FOUR! Short again, wide as well, this time Head cuts it through point for a boundary again! |
8.4 : W Riaz to T Head, FOUR! Three in a row! Short and wide outside off once again, Head cuts it through point for another boundary! Poor bowling from Riaz. 50 UP FOR AUSTRALIA! |
8.5 : W Riaz to T Head, Short and outside off, cut again, this time Umar Akmal gets across from point to his left to stop the ball. |
8.6 : W Riaz to T Head, Landed around off, watchfully defended. 14 from the over. |
9.1 : H Ali to C Lynn, Full and outside off, Lynn backs away, aiming to punch it through the off side but is not close to the pitch of the ball and ends up hitting it back to the bowler off the inside half of the bat. |
9.2 : H Ali to C Lynn, OUT! Caught! Hasan Ali strikes! Poor batting now, from Lynn. The confidence got to him. He was perhaps thinking that this is the last over of the Mandatory Powerplay and wanted to take full toll but got outsmarted. Hasan changed the pace, bowling at 119.8 kph, Lynn tried to slog it across but failed to read the slower one. Got a top edge which balooned to the leg side and Mohammad Rizwan took it running a bit to his left. Promised a lot but it was a short stay from Lynn. En |
MITCHELL MARSH walks in at number 5, replacing Lynn. |
9.3 : H Ali to T Head, FOUR! How is that for a counter-punch? Full and wide outside off, Head leans and crashes it through the covers for a boundary! His last 10 balls have yielded 22 runs for Head. Mostly through the region in front of square on the off side. |
Hasan changes the angle now, comes around the wicket. |
9.4 : H Ali to T Head, FOUR! PRISTINE! Full and wide outside off, Head shows his classical side this time as he drives this through the covers for consecutive boundaries! |
9.5 : H Ali to T Head, Defended off the back foot by the batsman. |
9.6 : H Ali to T Head, Outside off, slashed down to third man for a run. 9 runs and a wicket from the over. Hasan Ali's figures read 3-0-30-1 so far. Has copped some stick but broke the threatening stand. AUSTRALIA ARE 62/3 IN THE POWERPLAY. |
POWERPLAY 2 has been signalled. Four fielders allowed outside the circle till the 40th over. |

10.1 : I Wasim to T Head, On middle and off, going away from the southpaw with the angle, played off the back foot through covers for a single. |

10.3 : I Wasim to M Marsh, On the stumps, played straight back off the back foot. |
10.4 : I Wasim to M Marsh, Fuller outside off, pushed through mid off. Wasim moves to his left and fields the ball and gives away nothing. |

10.6 : I Wasim to M Marsh, Short and wide outside off, Marsh looks to cut it but gets a bottom edge into the ground. Good tight over by Wasim. Just one from it! |

12.1 : I Wasim to T Head, Sliding away from the southpaw, Head guides it lat but it's straight to short third man. |
12.2 : I Wasim to T Head, Outside off, angling further away, Head is beaten in his shot and Rizwan collects the ball and takes the bails off in a flash. Appeals for stumping but the square leg umpire says not out. |
12.3 : I Wasim to T Head, Served around off, Head reads it wrong and looks to turn it on the on side with the spin. But, it's a arm ball and Head gets squared up. The leading edge takes the ball through backward point for a single. |
12.4 : I Wasim to M Marsh, Angling into the pads, Marsh goes for a wild flick but misses and gets hit on the pads. |
12.5 : I Wasim to M Marsh, Outside off, Marsh drives it through mid off for a single. |

Drinks break! Successful period for the Men in Green as they have seen the backs of 4 Aussie batsman. Warner was put out of his misery by Amir while the skipper followed his opening batsmen, immediately on the next ball. Lynn failed to continue his Australian domestic T20 form. Umar lobs the throw back to the bowler who runs towards the stumps and takes the bails off. Easy run out. End of a sensible stand of 42 from 53 balls. |

What a comeback from the Aussies! Thanks to a superb innings from their keeper, Matthew Wade! The hosts were pushed on the back foot early on as Mohammad Amir sent Warner and Smith packing in back-to-back deliveries in the 5th over. Lynn and Head looked to settle things down with the latter playing a run-a-ball 39! However, both of them along with Marsh fell in quick succession which got the hosts further into trouble. |
Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Wade then steadied the ship as they stitched an 82-run partnership for the 6th wicket. The Big Show was looking in a good touch but he was undone by some smart piece of bowling by Hasan Ali. Faulkner then gifted his wicket. Wade, however, didn't stop fighting till the end and got involved in some good partnerships of 42, 23 and an unbeaten 33 runs with the tail. The Aussie keeper then went on to score his maiden century on the very last ball of the innings and take his |
Pakistan bowlers did really well with the new ball. Took 4 wickets before the first drinks break. Amir was excellent with his first spell and made Warner dance in the middle before putting him out of his misery. Hasan Ali was a bit expensive but bowled cleverly. Used change of pace to his strength and got 3 wickets for it. The spin duo of Wasim and Hafeez kept it tight by giving under 4 runs per over. Riaz and Nawaz were the other two bowlers used but both of them had an off day with the latter |

0.5 : M Starc to S Khan, Fuller on the pads, tickled round the corner. But, there is a short fine leg in place so no runs taken. |
Interesting piece of commentary from Mark Taylor on air. He mentions that the end from where Starc is bowling, he is running in from the sun into the shade where Sharjeel or Azhar are batting. Difficult to adjust. |
0.6 : M Starc to S Khan, Full and angling in, Sharjeel looks to flick but misses and gets hit low on the pads. |

2.6 : M Starc to A Ali, The batsman has played it to the point region. |
Seems like Wade is suffering from cramps. He batted for two-and-a-half hours and is limping a touch right now. Usman Khawaja comes out with a health drink. |
3.1 : B Stanlake to S Khan, A full ball down the leg side, Sharjeel misses his tuck and the ball deflects off his pads behind. But Matthew Wade flies to his right like a cheetah and stops it. Well, cheetahs do not fly but hope you get what I mean. Stopped a certain boundary there. Seems like the health drink is working. |
3.2 : B Stanlake to S Khan, On middle and off, defended back to the bowler. |
3.3 : B Stanlake to S Khan, WIDE. Slips this down the leg side, Khan misses his flick again and this time the ball goes past his bat. |
B Stanlake to S Khan, On a good length around middle and leg, SK looks to play the pick-up pull, similar to how the great Sanath Jayasuriya used to play. The intention was good, the execution wasn't. The ball hits his pads and went back to the bowler. |

4.2 : M Starc to S Khan, Full on middle, driven straight to mid on. |
4.3 : M Starc to S Khan, Finally gets bat on ball with his swing and chips it over mid-wicket. Does not have enough on it and James Faulkner stops it in the deep, running to his right. Two runs taken. |

5.4 : B Stanlake to S Khan, OUCH! ON THE HELMET! That is a sharp ball. A bouncer on middle, SK ducks, taking his eyes off the ball and nearly plays the price. But the ball hits him on his helmet and goes to third man. The batsmen take a single. Hopefully, he is okay. |
The twelfth man comes out with the helmet but Sharjeel says he is fine and asks him to stay where he is. Meanwhile, Stanlake wants a drinks now and is on his haunches. He is shaking his head. This does not look good. The physio is out in the middle. So Sharjeel automatically now replaces his helmet. Both players are okay now. |
5.5 : B Stanlake to A Ali, The batsman defends it from within the crease. |
5.6 : B Stanlake to A Ali, Good finish to the over, full on middle, pushed towards mid on. 11 from the over. |

7.5 : Pat Cummins to A Ali, Shortish in length outside off, Azhar arches his back and tries to play the cut but misses. |
7.6 : Pat Cummins to A Ali, Full and outside off, driven towards mid off. |
8.1 : J Faulkner to S Khan, OUT! Caught! Sharjeel throws it away. Well, not really though. That is the way he plays. Full on middle, Sharjeel looks to go over the top but mistimes it towards mid on. 41.5 : J Faulkner to W Riaz, Full and wide outside off, Wahab miscues this over cover where Steven Smith leaps to his right but the ball evades him. Perhaps the ball hit his hand while going through. A single taken. You can count it as a DROP though some will not agree. |
41.6 : J Faulkner to W Riaz, On middle and off, tucked through mid-wicket for a single. |
42.1 : Pat Cummins to W Riaz, Full on middle, swinging in, Riaz looks to whip it through the leg side but gets an inside edge onto his pads. The ball ricochets past the off stump behind. |
42.2 : Pat Cummins to W Riaz, A full toss outside off, swatted down to long on for a single. |
42.3 : Pat Cummins to H Ali, On a good length around off, cutting in, worked through mid on for a run. |
42.4 : Pat Cummins to W Riaz, OUT! The pain is over. AUSTRALIA HAVE WON BY 92 RUNS. A length ball outside off, Riaz backs away and slashes hard but only gets a top edge. Mitchell Starc runs to his left and takes a simple catch at mid off. The game is finally over after dawdling along for so long. |
An easy victory in the end for the home side. The scorecard does not show it though. When you see a team winning by 92 runs, it means the victor has dominated proceedings. Yes, but Pakistan did have their chances. |
The visitors were never in the run chase though. Sharjeel and Azhar did the correct part by seeing off the new balls. But then, the former's wicket spelt trouble. Azhar then injured his hamstring and next, Hafeez went cheaply. After that, there was some intent shown as Umar Akmal tried to counter-attack but once he went, it was just a mere formality. |
A decent outing with the ball for Australia. Billy Stanlake did not have the greatest of ODI debuts but the others did well. Starc bowled with swing and zeal and picked up 2 wickets while Cummins bowled with sheer pace, taking 3 scalps. Faulkner and Mitchell Marsh were brilliant. Personally feel that Marsh could have got more than just one wicket while Faulkner ended up with 4. How good was Travis Head? No wickets, but 0/28 in 10 overs is gold dust on any pitch. |
Earlier in the afternoon, Australia escaped embarrassment. All their batsmen were in a hurry to get runs and ended up throwing their wickets away. They were tottering at 78/5 and then 170/7 but Pakistan missed a golden opportunity to restrict the Aussies under 200. It was a different Glenn Maxwell today, playing a bit more responsibly while Matthew Wade has shown that the tradition of a good wicket-keeper batsman is still strong with his terrific century. He first formed a stand with Maxwell and |
MATTHEW WADE has been named the Man Of The Match for his run-a-ball century. He says that it is a great feeling to have scored a century. Praises Pakistan for putting the Aussie top order in early trouble. Credits Glenn Maxwell for accelerating the scoring and adds that the partnership with him gave Wade confidence. On his century in the last over, he says that he was not paying attention to his milestone till he reached 93 and then threw his bat around. Says that the Aussies were confident that |
Pakistan skipper, AZHAR ALI says his hamstring is a bit sore. But hopes that he recovers soon. Says that the physios will have a look and will pass their judgement on whether he can take part in the next game or not. Credits his bowlers for a superb bowling performance at the start. After getting Australia 5 down for 78, he suggests that they should have had them out earlier. But thinks the target was also chaseable. Adds that it was very hot and tiring to field under the sun and chase the ball |
Victorious Aussie captain, STEVEN SMITH admits that it was an average start with the bat for Australia. Feels that the batsmen were in a bit of a hurry. Praises Wade for scoring his maiden ODI hundred. Adds that 270 was around par, given the conditions and was confident that Australia could restrict Pakistan to below that. On the batting depth, he says that the Aussies have a long batting line-up, as much as till Mitchell Starc at 10. Still, feels that it was not used properly today and wants hi |
That is it from the 'Gabba then. Australia showed why they are ranked the best ODI team in the world today while Pakistan showed, well, they were just Pakistan, letting the match slip after having it in control. They do not have much time to turn around as the second ODI will be played at the MCG on Sunday, 15th January, 2017 at 0850 IST (0320 GMT). Do join us then. In the meanwhile, do have a look at the SA-SL Test at the Wanderers. We are wandering off now. ADIOS! TAKE CARE! |
