0.0 : Hello and welcome to this penultimate game of the qualifying stage of ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Group B where Bangladesh will face Papua New Guinea. This promises to be an exciting encounter as the teams have all to play for as we approach the Super 12 stage.
Bangladesh did manage to win their last game against Oman after a hiccup against Scotland in their opening game. They need to win this game in order to progress to the next stage but they would also have their eyes on the next league game where Scotland will face Oman. The Bangla Tigers would hope that Scotland hand a defeat to Oman which will see them go through to the Super 12 stage and the net run rate scenario will be out of the equation. But first things first, they have to win this game
Papua New Guinea are almost out of contention for making it to the Super 12 stage and it will be nothing less than a miracle if they manage to progress further. They lost their first two games and are languishing at the bottom of the points table. PNG would look to end the qualifying stage on a high but they will face a side that is hungry for a win in Bangladesh and nothing is going to come easy for them. A very strong finish from Bangladesh has seen them breach the 180-run mark and we believe that is well over par. Mahmudullah will be very pleased with the work done by his batters after he elected to bat.
The start for Bangladesh was not the best one though as they lost Naim early. Das and Shakib then steadied the ship with a 50-run stand. Bangladesh then lost two quickly as Rahim did not last long in the middle after Das fell. Shakib along with Mahmudullah laid the platform but just as it was time to accelerate, Shakib fell. Mahmudllah though continued and smashed a brilliant half ton. He did fall towards the end but Saifuddin played a brilliant cameo and added the finishing touches.
A total of 7 bowlers is what PNG used and they bowled well in bits and pieces. Morea and Ravu did a decent job up front. Vala was also impressive in the middle overs, however, it was the death overs where the game completely slipped away from them. Their bowlers took a real pounding towards the end and conceded more than 60 runs in the last 5. So as expected, quite a massive win for Bangladesh. It was never in doubt once they score the number of runs they did but it was a very poor outing with the bat from Papua New Guinea. Yes, it was an uphill task for them but they just surrendered. None of their top 7 managed to score in double digits. The top scorer for them was Doriga who walked in at number 8. Had it not been for him, it could have been even more embarrassing for them.
The Bangladesh bowling was on point. Shakib Al Hasan was the star yet again with a four-fer and he was well supported by the rest. Overall, it was a complete team effort from them. First, a collective effort saw them get to 180-plus, then their bowlers rose to the occasion to give them an emphatic win which takes them to the Super 12s with some confidence in their side.
Shakib Al Hasan, Player of the Match, says that anyone can beat anyone in this tournament but now they feel better as they have qualified and they would express more from now on going forward. Tells that he has been playing non-stop cricket for the past 5-6 months and hopes that he will pull of this T20 World Cup.
The batting of Papua New Guinea was a sorry show. None of the batters from their top order got going and at one point, it felt like they would not even reach 50. But Kiplin Doriga hit some big ones towards the end and scored 46 runs. Overall, they would be quite disappointed with their show.
Assad Vala, the skipper of Papua New Guinea is down for a chat. He says that they got the momentum in the middle overs but credits Bangladesh by saying that they batted well in the death overs and overall they are very disappointed. Tells that their batting is a concern as they are losing lots of wickets in the Powerplay. Adds that executing the skills under pressure is important but they failed to do so.
