0.0 : Hello and welcome for match 2 of this edition's Indian T20 League. Eden Gardens is all set to host its first game of this season. Last season's runner's up Hyderabad are the visitors today. Kolkata will look to take revenge for last season's loss in the eliminator. We expect a cracker of a contest. Stay tuned for updates as the action is not far away. |
WEATHER REPORT - It is scorching hot and the temperatures are soaring. The humidity is high too. The players would be waiting for the sun to set soon. |
TOSS - Time for the spin of the coin. It is not Kane Williamson or David Warner walking alongside Dinesh Karthik. It is Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is filling in for the injured Willy. Heads is the call from Bhuvi, but it is a Tail. Kolkata opt to CHASE. |
Kolkata skipper, Dinesh Karthik, reckons the wicket will play even throughout the game and hence they want to chase. States that the team is prepared well enough but feels that it is a long tournament and so, wants to take one game at a time. |
Hyderabad captain, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, says that he has three spinners in the side, so is looking forward to bat first and get a defendable total. Is disappointed to lose Kane Williamson for today but is more than happy to get David Warner back in the side. |
Shakib Al Hasan rings the traditional bell at the Eden Gardens. The Kolkata players get into a huddle. Now, they are ready to get going. Out walk the Hyderabad openers with their weapons of mass destruction. Why do we say so? Because, their names are... David Warner and Jonny Bairstow. Prasidh Krishna to start off with the new ball. Warner to face... |

0.3 : P Krishna to D Warner, WIDE! Krishna is having trouble controlling the swing. He sprays one more down the leg side. Wide signalled. |
P Krishna to D Warner, Finally one on the off side. It takes Prasidh 4 balls to get his line right. Length ball on off, Warner punches it straight to the point fielder. |
0.4 : P Krishna to D Warner, A good in-swinging delivery by Prasidh. Pitching fuller in length around middle. Warner just tucks it away to the mid-wicket fielder. Misfield by Lynn helps Warner to increase a run. |
0.5 : P Krishna to J Bairstow, No ball. An attempted beamer. Went above waist line. Bairstow ducks under it. |
P Krishna to J Bairstow, A length delivery on leg, Jonny was looking it to heave to the leg side. Gets an inside edge onto his unmentionables. He runs a single though. Leg bye signalled in fact. |
Oops... the physio comes out to the middle with a laugh. Nothing anyone can do when you are hit on the box but here is the reason for the laughter. Bairstow has not worn a abdomen guard. Will not forget to do so in future now. |
0.6 : P Krishna to D Warner, Good length delivery on the pads, Warner just flicks it towards backward square leg and keeps the strike. 8 off the first. |
Piyush Chawla will partner Prasidh with the new ball. |

Review time pretty early! Piyush Chawla reckons that he has trapped Warner LBW. Looks to be pitching outside leg, but Karthik, after a long chat with his bowler, has signalled for the review. This could be a bad decision for the team... |
1.5 : P Chawla to D Warner, Not Out! Poor decision from Chawla and Karthik. Googly from Chawla pitching outside leg, Warner tries to flick it but misses and gets hit on the pad. Kolkata players go up in appeal but it is turned down. Chawla and Karthik have a chat and decide to take it upstairs. Replays roll in and show it was pitching outside leg. Kolkata lose their review in the 2nd over itself. |
1.6 : P Chawla to D Warner, A back of a length delivery on middle, Warner punched it straight to the cover fielder. |
2.1 : P Krishna to J Bairstow, Full toss on the pads, Bairstow flicks it to the fielder at deep square leg for a single. Missed out an opportunity here. |
0.0 : Chris Lynn is miked up and is having a chat with the on-air commentators. Says that the team did suffer a setback with the injuries to some young lads but is happy with the preparation camp overall. On the pitch, Chris says that it looks a belter but wants his bowlers to strike early. On the crowd support, Lynn says that it is nice to have no matches at neutral venues this season. He admires the crowd here at Eden. On his own injury to his right shoulder, Chris says that he is not 100 percent fi |

2.6 : P Krishna to D Warner, FOUR! CRASHED! A back of a length delivery pitching on middle and leg. Warner was just waiting for it, gets on his back foot and pulls it to the mid-wicket region. Another boundary for David. |
Another review! This time by Hyderabad. Bairstow has been adjudged LBW! Has Chawla struck gold this time? Is there an inside edge? Is it missing leg? Jonny signalled for the review immediately... |
3.1 : P Chawla to J Bairstow, NOT OUT! Inside edge saves him and a good review from Bairstow. Googly from Chawla. Bairstow does not pick it up. He looks to play it straight but gets hit on the pads. 4.5 : L Ferguson to D Warner, WAS THAT A NO BALL? Umpire denies Warner's question. A full toss on leg side, which dipped in the air. Warner pulls it to the mid-wicket region. The fielder at mid-wicket attempts a catch but the ball falls short to the diving fielder. Warner adds two runs to the score. |
4.6 : L Ferguson to D Warner, FOUR! Crisp! A fuller length delivery on off, Warner drives it beautifully towards the covers region. The ball touches the boundary ropes. David looks in top form today. |

5.5 : S Narine to D Warner, FOUR! ADMONISHED! Does it occur to you that this bloke has not played much competitive cricket for a year? Not to us. He is playing with consummate ease. Full and down the leg side, Warner gets down and mows a slog sweep over mid-wicket! |
5.6 : S Narine to D Warner, Full and around middle, watchfully defended to end the Powerplay. 54/0 are Hyderabad. |
Kuldeep Yadav into the attack as well. |
6.1 : K Yadav to J Bairstow, Kuldeep bowls a short ball on off, Bairstow cuts it to deep point for a single. |

6.3 : K Yadav to D Warner, Was it a dropped? Flighted on leg, Warner comes down the track and looks to hit it but gets something on it. Karthik misses the ball behind the stumps as Warner was out of his crease. Definitely a chance to get the stumping. Costly miss this. |

6.6 : K Yadav to D Warner, A back of length delivery, Warner rocks back on and punches it to the covers region for a single. |
The first strategic break of the match. Hyderabad are going along merrily but the bowling has not been great either. There is nothing in the pitch and the bowlers need to try and bowl consistent lines to at least stem the run flow. |
7.1 : S Narine to D Warner, Shorter ball on off, Warner cuts it towards point and gets to the other end. |
7.2 : S Narine to J Bairstow, FOUR! Deft touch from Bairstow. Top spinner around off, Bairstow gets on one knee and paddles it over the keeper's head for a boundary. |
7.3 : S Narine to J Bairstow, Hammered but just for a single. Tossed up on middle and off, Bairstow heaves it towards deep mid-wicket. The ball bounces on its way to the fielder there. |

8.3 : A Russell to J Bairstow, Good length ball around off, Bairstow flat bats it towards third man for a run. |
8.4 : A Russell to D Warner, FOUR! Warner is in the mood today. Length delivery outside off. Russel offers width to Warner and you never do that when he is in fine form. He frees his arm and whacks it through covers for a boundary. Narine gets his hand to it inside the circle but cannot do anything. |
Looks like Narine has some damage to his finger. HE IS GOING OFF THE FIELD. Doesn't look in too much discomfort but then, Sunil is not the best at emoting, is he... |
8.5 : A Russell to D Warner, SIX! Brilliant by Warner. 50 up for Warner. A short pitched delivery on off, Warner gets the perfect room to free his arms. He plays an upper cut to the third man region. And the ball goes above the boundary ropes at the third man region. Warner raises his bat towards the pavilion. He acknowledges the reception from the crowd. David Warner has announced himself back. |
8.6 : A Russell to D Warner, A length delivery on middle, Warner just taps it the cover region and runs for a single. |
Kuldeep Yadav is back into the attack. |
9.1 : K Yadav to D Warner, Hit hard but straight to the fielder. Flighted outside off, Warner slashes it straight to the fielder at cover. |

9.5 : K Yadav to J Bairstow, Nice shot but only for a single. Tossed up on middle and off, Bairstow sweeps it towards deep backward square leg for a single. |
9.6 : K Yadav to D Warner, SIX! Warner is on fire today. Short and straight outside off, Warner hits it straight as an arrow and heaves it over long on fence and the ball hits the camera behind the fence. The cameraman is lucky not to get hit there. |
Nitish Rana time! Do not take him lightly. He has dismissed Virat Kohli in one of the previous editions. |
10.1 : N Rana to J Bairstow, FOUR! Short and outside off, Bairstow rocks back and punches it through the covers for a boundary! |
10.2 : N Rana to J Bairstow, Pushes this through mid on for a single. |
10.3 : N Rana to D Warner, Full and outside off, spinning away, Warner reaches out and lofts it over cover for a run. |
10.4 : N Rana to J Bairstow, IN THE AIR... PUT DOWN! Tough chance for Shubman Gill. Full and outside off, Bairstow reaches out to drive but does not time it cleanly. Gill reacts quickly but the ball comes on way too quickly for him. It lobs off his hand and then goes away, he tries to leap and then dive to take it in the second attempt but fails. A run taken. |
10.5 : N Rana to D Warner, Driven through mid off by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single. |
10.6 : N Rana to J Bairstow, Full and around middle, pushed down to long on for one. |
Lockie Ferguson returns. |
11.1 : L Ferguson to J Bairstow, Full and outside off, Bairstow throws his bat at that and gets a thick inside edge which escapes the leg stump. A single taken to fine leg. |
11.2 : L Ferguson to D Warner, Short and outside off, Warner punches it through the covers for a couple. |
11.3 : L Ferguson to D Warner, Terrific running. A high full toss, down the leg side, David works it through square leg and even with the fielder charging in, he outcharges him for the second. |
11.4 : L Ferguson to D Warner, IS THAT ANOTHER DROP? Looks to be so. Down the leg side. A short delivery outside leg, Warner attempting a pull get his gloves and Dinesh behind the stumps drops it down. Warner grabs a single. It all looked that Warner didn't get any part on that ball, but replays shows that the ball just kisses his gloves before flying down to Dinesh Kartik. Well that will be counted as dropped chance. |
11.5 : L Ferguson to J Bairstow, FOUR! Off the inside edge this time! Ferguson bowls this one cross seam. Pitching on leg side, short of good length. Bairstow attempts a pull but gets an inside edge onto the ground and the ball goes to the fine leg region for a boundary. |
11.6 : L Ferguson to J Bairstow, Leg bye. A short delivery on off, slower one this time, Bairstow again attempts a pull but fails to connect, the ball hits his body. And takes a single. |
12.1 : P Chawla to J Bairstow, Short and outside off, played through point for a single. |
12.2 : P Chawla to D Warner, FOUR! Warner is dominating the bowlers here. Short on middle, Warner makes room by moving away from the leg stumps and whacks it over covers for a boundary. |
12.3 : P Chawla to D Warner, Flighted on middle and off, Warner sweeps it for a single. |
12.4 : P Chawla to J Bairstow, Shorter on middle and leg, Bairstow gets on his back foot and blocks it. |
12.5 : P Chawla to J Bairstow, OUT! Bowled! Finally some respite for the bowlers. Googly pitching just outside off, Bairstow looks to flat bat it through covers but misses it completely. The ball goes onto crash the off stump. Finally the partnership is broken. But Warner is still out there and that is danger for Kolkata. |
Vijay Shankar walks in at number 3, replacing Bairstow. |
12.6 : P Chawla to V Shankar, Full on middle and leg, Shankar pushes it to mid-wicket. Dot to finish the over. 6 runs and a wicket off this one. |
Narine is back on. |
13.1 : S Narine to D Warner, Shorter and spinning away from the southpaw. Warner looks to cut it but misses. |
13.2 : S Narine to D Warner, In the air...but safe. Full and wide outside off, Warner looks to slash it through covers but gets a thick outside edge. The ball falls short of short third man. Single taken. |
13.3 : S Narine to V Shankar, In the air... but in no man's land. Flighted on off, Shankar is early in his loft over covers. He does not time it well but falls way short of the fielder in the deep. 2 runs taken. |
13.4 : S Narine to V Shankar, SIX! That is massive. A nice floated delivery around off, Vijay Shankar just picks this one and slogs sweeps it above the mid-wicket region. A brilliant hit by Vijay Shankar, he has hit it outside the park. Brilliant batting. |
13.5 : S Narine to V Shankar, Fuller this time on leg, Shankar flicks it towards the fine leg region and adds a double. |
13.6 : S Narine to V Shankar, Full on off, defended from front foot. |
Prasidh Krishna back on. |
14.1 : P Krishna to D Warner, Length ball on leg and middle, Warner looks to flick it but it goes off his thigh pad towards point region for a single. Leg bye signalled. |
14.2 : P Krishna to V Shankar, Length ball outside off, Shankar taps it down to third man for a run. |
14.3 : P Krishna to D Warner, Play and a miss. Change of pace from Prasidh. Warner looks to pull it away but gets beaten by the slowness of the pitch. Dot ball this. A very crucial one. |
14.4 : P Krishna to D Warner, A short pitch delivery on off, Warner cuts it the point region for a single. |
14.5 : P Krishna to V Shankar, A full length delivery on middle and leg, Shankar flicks it down the mid on region for a single. |

Andre Russell is back into the attack. |
15.1 : A Russell to D Warner, Low full toss on middle and leg. It comes in a bit slighly. Warner strokes it towards mid off and runs a single. |
15.2 : A Russell to V Shankar, Slightly slower this one. It is outside off, Shankar dabs it down to third man for a single. |
15.3 : A Russell to D Warner, SIX! Unbelievable shot this. Slower delivery again. It is on a length, Warner takes his front foot out of the line and flat bats it over the long on fence for a maximum. |
15.4 : A Russell to D Warner, Low full toss this time on off, Warner strokes it to cover and follows the six with a single. |
15.5 : A Russell to V Shankar, Brilliant ball this one. A very low full toss on middle and leg, Shankar does well to get his bat down and plays it to cover for a run. |
15.6 : A Russell to D Warner, OUT. Caught! Hyderabad have lost their second wicket. Warner falls this time. A fuller length delivery on off, David Warner just slams it hard to the cover region from his front foot. Uthappa at covers takes a beautiful diving catch. That was some exceptional batting performance by Warner. He deserve all the applaud from the crowd. |
Strategic break - Wicket just at the end there and the dangerous Warner is back in the hut. Kolkata will be hoping that this can put some brakes on the scoring and restrict Hyderabad under 190. Hyderabad meanwhile would be hoping that their big hitters can make full use of the platform set by Warner and take the score past the 200-run mark. Yusuf Pathan will bat after the break. |
16.1 : L Ferguson to V Shankar, Full and wide outside off, blasted through the covers for a single. |
16.2 : L Ferguson to Y Pathan, A terrific yorker on middle, Pathan can only dig it out towards the bowler. |
16.3 : L Ferguson to Y Pathan, Poor keeping from Karthik. A short ball outside off, slower in pace, Yusuf looks to pull but is beaten by the lack of pace. He misses but Karthik fumbles. A bye conceded. |
16.4 : L Ferguson to V Shankar, A fuller delivery on off, Vijay Shankar goes for a drive but gets an outside edge and the ball flies to third man. Single added. |
16.5 : L Ferguson to Y Pathan, A short delivery on middle, Yusuf Pathan pulls it towards the mid-wicket region for a single. |
16.6 : L Ferguson to V Shankar, Full on off, Shankar drives it to the cover region for a single. |
17.1 : A Russell to V Shankar, Outside off, a low full toss, squeezed behind point for a couple. |
17.2 : A Russell to V Shankar, Dropped short, outside off, slapped towards long on for a single. Not happy with himself, is Shankar. He is hitting them hard but finding the fielders. |
17.3 : A Russell to Y Pathan, OUT! KNOCKED HIM OVER! Might be a blessing in disguise for Hyderabad. Yusuf Pathan is not a rapid starter and with the balls left in the innings, he needed to get going almost immediately, which he struggles to do. This is a slower delivery, beautifully disguised but Pathan does not pick it at all. He is months early into his flick and the ball arrives much late, goes past the bat and ignites the Zinc bails. |
Manish Pandey walks in at number 5, replacing Pathan. |
17.4 : A Russell to M Pandey, A short delivery on off, Manish Pandey ramps down to the third man region for a single. |
17.5 : A Russell to V Shankar, Full on off, Vijay Shankar drives it to the extra cover fielder and runs a single. |
17.6 : A Russell to M Pandey, FOUR! Good shot that! A slower one this time from Russell, pitching short on off, Manish Pandey clears his front leg and strikes it with precision, piercing the gap between extra cover and mid on. |
18.1 : P Krishna to V Shankar, Follows the batsman down the leg side, Shankar misses his flick and is hit on the pads. The ball rolls to the off side and the batsmen take a single. Leg bye signalled. |
18.2 : P Krishna to M Pandey, Full and outside off, Pandey chips this towards long off for a single. |
18.3 : P Krishna to V Shankar, SIX! 'That is creamed right off the middle', quips Brett Lee on air. A length ball outside off, slower in pace, Shankar spots it, gives himself room to the leg side and sends it sailing over long on! |
18.4 : P Krishna to V Shankar, Play and a miss. Full outside off, Shankar tries to put his bat to the ball but fails. |
Adjudged LBW! But review taken. Looks to be going down leg. |
18.5 : P Krishna to V Shankar, NOT OUT! Missing leg! That is a good review from Shankar but this is what happens due to this rule. The batsman is not out but the single that he took, will not be counted as the ball becomes dead after the batsman is adjudged out. A full toss, down the leg side, Vijay misses his flick and is hit on the pads. The bowler appeals and the umpire, after taking a long time, raises his finger. Vijay immediately takes the review and the Hawk Eye takes a long time to come u |
18.6 : P Krishna to V Shankar, FOUR! Absolute precision. A full length delivery on leg, Vijay Shankar flicks it down the leg through the gap between short fine leg and square leg. Another boundary added to the score. |
Lockie Ferguson to bowl the final over. Can Hyderabad touch 190? |
19.1 : L Ferguson to M Pandey, Outside off, played through point for a single. |
19.2 : L Ferguson to V Shankar, That is bowled at 149.2 kph, Shankar can only drive it down the ground for a run. |
19.3 : L Ferguson to M Pandey, Full and around off, worked through mid on for a run. |
19.4 : L Ferguson to V Shankar, FOUR! Finally gets a boundary. Kolkata have pulled things back really nicely here. Short and outside off, Shankar pulls it over mid-wicket for a boundary! |
19.5 : L Ferguson to V Shankar, Full and outside off, slapped straight back over the bowler for a couple. |
RUN OUT? Good throw from Shubman Gill but no signs of confidence from Dinesh Karthik. Referred upstairs... |
19.6 : L Ferguson to V Shankar, SAFE AS A HOUSE. Short and outside off, Shankar plays it through point and immediately calls for the second. The throw comes in from Gill at sweeper cover and it is at a nice height to Dinesh Karthik who knocks the bails off. The appeal is referred upstairs but replays confirm that the second run is counted. HYDERABAD FINISH ON 181/3! |
Not a bad score from Hyderabad but given that they were 144/1 in the 16th over, they will feel they are 20 short. Kolkata were mostly not that great with the ball or in the field when Warner was batting but once he was dismissed, they came back strongly. The yorkers found their mark, slower ones were being disguised nicely and just 37 runs came in the last 25 balls. |
For now, the talk of the town is David Warner. His flamboyant 85 from 53 balls took the wind out of Kolkata's sails. He never looked like he was out of touch and flayed the attack without much fuss. Hyderabad will be buoyed with his form and here he is, talking to Michael Clarke. |
Warner says that they did not want to hit from ball 1 initially but got off to a great start. Then, they had to reassess. Says that he is chirpy and did not feel like he missed the dressing room much. Credits his doctors in New South Wales for enabling him to recover quickly from his shoulder injury. Wants his bowlers to strike with the new ball and swing it hard. On Kolkata's bowling, Warner feels that it is not extremely difficult to score against their spinners but if you lose wickets then yo |
182 to win then. Do Hyderabad have enough? Or will Kolkata chase it down? The answer is on the other side... |
