Mitchell Starc comes in at number 9, with 3 balls left. Can he get a boundary or two? |
49.4 : T Boult to M Starc, OUT! BOWLED! That has gone right under! Forget the boundary, he cannot even stay for more than a ball! Superb bowling by Boult and he is now on a hat-trick. A perfect yorker, right at the base of the stumps, Starc cannot even have the time to hit the ball through the line and the bat comes down late. Boom. Right at the base of middle. |
Jason Behrendorff comes out to face the hat-trick ball. Can Boult emulate Shami? |

49.5 : T Boult to J Behrendorff, OUT! LBW! IT IS A HAT-TRICK! History has been created by Trent Boult. He becomes the first Kiwi to take a hat-trick in an ODI World Cup. What a ball to get the hat-trick. It is an inswinger, not exactly a yorker, but right on the full mark. Behrendorff looks to flick but misses and is hit on the back pad. Boult screams, the umpire takes his time but then raises his finger! Expectantly, Jason takes the review. There is no inside edge and the ball is hitting the pad |
Nathan Lyon is the last man in. |
49.6 : T Boult to N Lyon, A dot on the final ball. Almost another yorker, but this is outside off. Lyon gets across to paddle but misses. Cummins wants a single but Lyon is not aware. Then he turns to look to Cummins but then by that time, Latham has under-armed his throw. Would have been out had he hit but he misses. Boult then tries to come forward and knock the bails off but Lyon gets back in. AUSTRALIA FINISH ON 243/9! |
WHAT A RECOVERY FROM AUSTRALIA! At 92 for 5, if you would have given them 243, they would have taken it with both hands. They have ended up with a total which is more than competitive on this wicket and they have two people to thank, Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey. |
Australia, after winning the toss and opting to bat, got off to the worst possible starts. They lost their best batters, Finch, Smith and Warner within Powerplay 1. Stoinis and Khawaja then did try to steady the ship but the former perished after getting off to a start. Maxwell then did not deliver when his team needed him too. At 92 for 5 and with Australia's batting not that deep, 150 is what everybody felt they would have been bundled out for. That was not the case though as Carey and Khawaja |
The New Zealand bowling was excellent to begin with! Boult was excellent with his lines and lengths. Ferguson bowled extremely well, he bowled quick and was intimidating at time. Neesham stuck to his plans of keeping it tight. Even Williamson, who brought himself on as there were two-left handers, was very handy. What New Zealand will be disappointed with is the effort from their frontline spinners. Both Santner and Sodhi went wicketless and were also a touch expensive. They still though will be |
Also, a word of praise for New Zealand's fielding! Yes, they did drop a few catches but all of them were not easy chances. If you keep that aside, they did manage to grab a few blinders. Their ground fielding was exceptional and they have easily saved around 10-15 runs in the field. |
Now then, the target seems to be a stiff one! Also, the wicket is not that easy to bat on. Australia have an excellent bowling line-up and New Zealand's batting except for Kane Williamson, has not been that great. A cracking chase awaits. Do join us in a while. |
0.0 : We are back for the chase! The Australian players make their way out to the middle. They are followed by a new opening partnership for New Zealand, Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls. 0.1 : J Behrendorff to M Guptill, A cracking shot just for a run! Slightly fuller and around off, there is no swing visible on the first ball. Guptill pushes it right off the middle to mid off for one. The chase is underway. |

31.6 : Pat Cummins to Tom Latham, On a length and around off, Taylor guides it to point. So what looked like would be a good over for New Zealand, turns out to be the perfect one for Australia. |
Steve Smith is back again. 1-0-4-0 so far. |
32.1 : S Smith to de Grandhomme, OUT! Colin de Grandhomme holes out! With all due respect to Smith, out of all the quality bowlers Australia have in their ranks, it is Steve Smith who gets him. Masterstroke from Aaron Finch. A golden duck for de Grandhomme. Smith floats this up and lands it around off. Colin needs no sighters, he straightaway looks to clear the ropes, that is probably what he was sent out for but does not get the timing right. It goes down Khawaja's throat who makes no mistake. T |
0.0 : Jimmy Neesham is the new man in. He played a brilliant knock in New Zealand's last game. Need something similar here. |

32.6 : S Smith to J Neesham, Shorter and outside off, Neesham looks to cut but ends up chopping it towards point. He gets off the mark. Just the two runs and a wicket from the over. Brilliant from Smith. He has probably done his job with the ball. |
Nathan Lyon is back! His figures so far are 5-0-14-0. He also has two left-handers out there so he would fancy his chances of getting a wicket here. |
33.1 : N Lyon to J Neesham, Full and outside off, turning away, pushed towards point. |
33.2 : N Lyon to J Neesham, Landed outside off, pushed back to the bowler. |

34.5 : G Maxwell to Tom Latham, Outside off, Latham drags his sweep through mid-wicket for one. |
34.6 : G Maxwell to J Neesham, A single to end as Neesham works it through mid-wicket. |
Mitchell Starc returns. Can he finish things off? 5-0-18-1 so far. |
35.1 : M Starc to J Neesham, On a length outside off, Neesham waits for the ball to come to him and guides it to third man for a single. 119 more needed from 89 balls. |
35.2 : M Starc to Tom Latham, Similar ball, Latham punches it straight to point. |
35.3 : M Starc to Tom Latham, OUT! Caught! Steve Smith, you beauty! Boy, he has plucked out an absolute blinder here. Full and on the pads, Latham flicks it uppishly. For a second, it seems like the ball is travelling to the mid-wicket fence. But there is someone else also travelling. In fact, he is flying. Superman Steve Peter Devereux Smith. He flings himself to his right at short mid-wicket and takes it one-handed. Starc runs to his left and hugs his former skipper. Next, Warner comes, beaming |
Mitchell Santner walks in at number 8, replacing Latham. New Zealand need a partnership. A big one. |

35.5 : M Starc to M Santner, Outside off, another one let through to the keeper. |

36.2 : N Lyon to M Santner, This is on the stumps, it is kept out. |
36.3 : N Lyon to M Santner, Almost! This is flatter and around off, it skids through and keeps coming in with the angle. Santner at the very end gets his bat down and ends up chopping it to the keeper. |
36.4 : N Lyon to M Santner, This is shorter and outside off, Santner pushes it through covers for one. |
36.5 : N Lyon to J Neesham, Floats it up outside off, Neesham goes against the turn, hits it over mid-wicket. The fielder in the deep runs to his right, dives and pushes it back in. Two taken. |
36.6 : N Lyon to J Neesham, On off, this is pushed down to long off for one. |
37.1 : M Starc to J Neesham, OHHH! This is just outside off, it is bowled on a length. Neesham looks to defend but ends up playing inside the line. Gets beaten. |

37.3 : M Starc to J Neesham, Neesham works this with the angle through mid-wicket for one. |
37.4 : M Starc to M Santner, Full and outside off, Santner mistimes it to mid off. |
37.5 : M Starc to M Santner, This is on middle, Santner works it towards mid-wicket. He sets off for a run but is sent back. Smith picks the ball up and has a shy at the striker's end but misses. Would not have made a difference had he hit, Santner was in. |
37.6 : M Starc to M Santner, Right on the badge! This is short and it gets big on the batsman. Santner looks to defend but the ball hits the glove and then the helmet. The Australian players gather around MS to as if he is fine. |
The physio comes out to check if Santner is fine and he is. |
38.1 : N Lyon to J Neesham, OUT! Caught and bowled! Another one bites the dust! Australia are into the bowling all-rounders now. This was always going to be a risky shot. Lyon tosses it up outside off, it is turning away. Neesham looks to hit it against the turn as he tries to slog sweep. The ball takes the top edge and goes up in the air towards the bowler. Lyon calls for it and takes it. |
0.0 : Ish Sodhi walks out to the middle. |
38.2 : N Lyon to M Santner, On the stumps, this is kept out. |

38.6 : N Lyon to Ish Sodhi, FOUR! Nice way to get off the mark! A half-tracker and it is down the leg side. Sodhi pulls it over short fine leg and bags a boundary. |
39.1 : M Starc to M Santner, On the stumps, this is pushed back to the bowler. |
39.2 : M Starc to M Santner, On the shorter side outside off, Santner looks to defend but then bails out. |

M Starc to Ish Sodhi, An appeal but the umpire turns it down! He signals is as a wide in the end. This is down the leg side, Sodhi looks to flick but it goes off something to the keeper. Carey takes it and appeals but the umpire signals it as a wide. Replays show it was an harsh call as it had kissed the thigh pad. |
A review taken in the nick of time! Ish Sodhi has been adjudged LBW to Starc. He has a discussion with Santner and then takes the review. No inside edge while Ball Tracker shows it to be clipping the top of middle stump. Good bye, Ish. |
M Starc to Ish Sodhi, OUT! Ball Tracker shows it to be clipping the top middle which means it is umpire's call and Sodhi has to continue walking. He does not take the review with him though. This is slightly fuller and it is fast, angling into middle from around the wicket. Sodhi looks to defend but misses to get hit on the front pad. An appeal follows and the umpire raises the finger. Sodhi walks upto his partner and reviews just in the nick of time. Replays roll in and they show the on-f |
POWERPLAY 3 time. 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. However, will Finch make any changes? Lockie Ferguson is the next man in. |
40.1 : N Lyon to M Santner, Flatter and outside off, Santner looks to push it through the off side but misses. |
40.2 : N Lyon to M Santner, On off again and Santner pushes it to covers. |
40.3 : N Lyon to M Santner, DROPPED! Difficult to call that a drop catch though. It would have been another blinder today. Santner comes down the track and hits it uppishly towards mid on. Warner there leaps, sticks his left hand up and tries to take it but the ball does not stay in. The ball rolls behind him for a run. |
40.4 : N Lyon to L Ferguson, Ferguson dances down the track but does not get to the pitch of it. He keeps it out. |
40.5 : N Lyon to L Ferguson, On off again and LF guides it to point. |
40.6 : N Lyon to L Ferguson, WIDE! Down the leg side, Ferguson lets it be. The keeper fails to collect it cleanly and a run is taken. |
N Lyon to M Santner, On off again, Santner guides it to point. |
41.1 : M Starc to L Ferguson, OUT! TIMBER! Starc gets his fourth! This is trademark Mitchell Starc. He comes running in from around the wicket, bowls it slightly fuller on middle and off. It pitches and straightens. Also skids through. Ferguson is not only late in bringing his bat down but also plays down the wrong line. The furniture behind is disturbed. Can he take a fifer in this over? Also, he is on a hat-trick. We have already seen one today, will we see another? |
0.0 : Trent Boult is the last man in. Can he save the hat-trick? |
41.2 : M Starc to T Boult, Boult keeps it out! Not hat-trick! On the stumps, Boult blocks it. |
41.3 : M Starc to T Boult, Goes short and outside off, Boult clears his front leg and looks to flat-bat it but misses. |
41.4 : M Starc to T Boult, Boult moves around his crease in the attempt to disturb the length and line of the bowler. Starc sticks to bowling it on the stumps. Boult hits it back to the bowler. |
41.5 : M Starc to T Boult, TB makes room again and Starc follows him with a yorker, this is jammed out. |
41.6 : M Starc to T Boult, This is shorter and on the body, Boult looks to heave it but it goes off the inside edge to the keeper. |
42.1 : N Lyon to M Santner, That does not bounce! Santner takes a few steps ahead but then sees the length is short and outside off. He goes back and tries to slap but is beaten by the low bounce. |
42.2 : N Lyon to M Santner, SIX! Santner will probably look to have some fun now! He shuffles in and brings in the slog sweep, hits it right off the middle and it goes into the stands at the mid-wicket region. |
Now then, not seen this happened often! The ball seems to have gone missing. However, they have found it but it seems like Warner and the security guard were searching for it at the wrong place. Warner though, takes some time out and eats some chips offered by one of the spectators. Finch looks at that and smiles. |
42.3 : N Lyon to M Santner, FOUR BYES! Flatter and down the leg side, Santner looks to pull but misses it goes past the keeper and into the fine leg fence. |
42.4 : N Lyon to M Santner, The batsman rocks onto the back foot and punches the ball. They pick up a single. |
42.5 : N Lyon to T Boult, Boult comes down the track and looks to swing, it goes off the inner half towards fine leg for two. |
42.6 : N Lyon to T Boult, Once again uses his feet and looks to go big. It goes off the inner half through mid-wicket. Santner does not want a run. 13 from the over. Don't think that makes a difference to Australia at the moment. |
43.1 : M Starc to M Santner, Good length and around off, Santner backs away and looks to go over the off side but misses. |
43.2 : M Starc to M Santner, A yorker on the pads, Santner looks to flick but misses to get hit on the pads. It rolls towards fine leg but no runs taken. |
Seems like the leather of the ball has come off. Maxwell throws it to Finch who shows it to the umpire. Joel Wilson takes out a pair of scissors and cuts off the thread. |
43.3 : M Starc to M Santner, Santner backs away and Starc follows him with a low full toss. Santner mistimes it to mid off. |
43.4 : M Starc to M Santner, OUT! CAUGHT! A huge smile on Starc's face and why not? He has picked a fifer. Second in this World Cup and his 7th in ODIs. He bangs it short and down the leg side. Santner helps it on its way but does not keep it down and the ball ends up landing into the hands of Behrendorff at fine leg. AUSTRALIA WIN BY 86 RUNS! |
A walk in the park for Australia. At the halfway mark, probably felt that 243 was 20 runs shy but the bowling just stepped up a notch. The Kiwis barely got going and and leave aside a brief half century stand between Taylor and Williamson, they were never in the chase. |
Back-to-back losses for the Black Caps. However, in this game, they looked totally at sea while batting. They got off to a quick start but then surprisingly, fell back. Once they got defensive, Australia got an opening and they pounced. Starc, Behrendorff and Cummins then choked the Black Caps and Nathan Lyon did his bit. |
24 wickets in this World Cup for Mitchell Starc. Yards ahead of the next best, Lockie Ferguson, who has 17 scalps. He becomes the FIRST PLAYER WITH 3 5-FERS IN ODI WORLD CUPS. The bowling attack was just too good and guess India and Australia are the only two teams in this competition who believe that if they get anything over 200, they have the bowling attack to defend that. |
What is wrong with New Zealand? Peaking too early? They were well on course to make it to the semi-final but two successive losses have pegged them back a touch. If England lose to India on Sunday, the Kiwis will confirm their semi-final berth automatically. They will be hoping that happens. Stay tuned for the presentation... |
ALEX CAREY HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. On Australia's poor start with the bat, Carey says it was not the start they wanted. Further adds he just wanted to spend time, assess conditions and bat as deep as possible. States the wicket was towards the slower side, there was turn and Kane Williamson was bowling well. Tells he though stuck to his strengths and it turned out to be a nice day for him. Credits Khawaja for the way he played and also praises Starc for the way he bowled. Informs he |
New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson, says that it was a challenging pitch to bat and as a bowler, if you hit the right areas, you could pick up wickets. Admits that they were in a position of strength for the first half but then credits the Aussies for rebuilding their innings. On the possibility of Trent Boult coming back earlier for his final spell, Williamson says that the match-ups kind of dictated the bowling changes. For instance, he says, that spin was proving to be a bigger threat and h |
Victorious Australian captain, Aaron Finch, says that he is feeling very happy at the moment, to see his side recover from 92/5. Jokingly says that it is nice to see the middle order get some hit in the middle but then is serious enough to quickly point out that it was not the matter they intended to give them that. Praises Carey's knock and all his bowlers. On Australia's improved bowling performance, Finch says that in the past, they have been defensive in overs 20-40, where they have observed |
That ends the game. Australia stay on top, with 14 points while New Zealand are tied with India on 11 points. Sunday, June 30, 2019, sees two of the potential tournament favourites taking on other. Though, whether those tags are still relevant or not, is a different question. India and England clash at Edgbaston and the game begins at 10.30 am local (0930 GMT). ADIOS! TAKE CARE! |
