0.0 : Hello and a warm welcome to the clash between West Indies and Bangladesh. Both these teams are coming off consecutive losses in their last couple of games and would need to get back to winning ways quickly if they want to stay in the race of making it to the semis. Who will break their losing streak? Stay with us to find out. |
The West Indies side that we have witnessed so far in the World Cup is not the power-hitting side that we have grown accustomed to seeing. In both their clashes so far, their batting has just not been upto the mark and that has hurt them big time. When a side has the likes of Simmons, Gayle, Pollard, Russell, etc in its ranks, one would expect it to put on massive scores on the board. But that has not been the case for West Indies in the competition. One of the reasons could be that the pitches |
Bangladesh, on the other hand, have been dealing with inconsistencies. They put on a big score against Sri Lanka, but their bowling and fielding let them down. But in the clash against England, their batting let them down. Bangladesh got to the Super 12s after staging a comeback from their loss against Scotland. They would want to stage a comeback here again but it will be much more difficult to do against top-quality sides in what has been termed as the 'Group of Death'. The Bangla Tigers have |
Pitch report - Daren Sammy is down for the pitch report. He says that the conditions are very hot and as far as the dimensions of the ground are concerned, the straight boundaries are a bit on the bigger side as compared to the square boundaries. Informs that so far in the Super 12s, the chasing teams have won most of the games. Danny Morrison is also there and says that this is a fresh and new wicket and he feels it will be all about spin to win. Morrison adds that spinners here will look to |
... Match Day ... |
Toss - It's time for the all-important toss. Kieron Pollard and Mahmudullah are in the middle. The latter calls correctly and BANGLADESH ELECT TO BOWL FIRST! |
Mahmudullah, the skipper of Bangladesh, says that batting first in the last game did not work for them. Adds that West Indies have a big batting lineup so they want to restrict them to a low score and chase it. Informs that there are two changes in the side - Soumya Sarkar and Taskin Ahmed come in for Nurul Hasan and Nasum Ahmed. |
Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Mohammad Naim, Liton Das (WK), Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (C), Afif Hossain, Soumya Sarkar (In for Nurul Hasan), Mahedi Hasan, Shoriful Islam, Taskin Ahmed (In for Nasum Ahmed), Mustafizur Rahman. |
West Indies (Playing XI) - Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle, Roston Chase (In for Lendl Simmons), Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran (WK), Kieron Pollard (C), Andre Russell, Dwayne Bravo, Jason Holder (In for Hayden Walsh), Akeal Hosein, Ravi Rampaul. |
Andre Russell is down for a chat. He says that every game from here is like a knockout game. Adds that they always knew that this group would be a tough one and they haven't been able to win so far. Mentions that in both the games so far, he has tried to get some balls under his belt but that has not worked. Finishes by saying that he hopes to spend more time in the middle and contribute to the team. |
Kieron Pollard, the captain of West Indies, says that it's a do-or-die game and that's the reality and they have no one but themselves to blame for that. Mentions that this is a perfect opportunity for them to put up a good score and defend it. Informs that there are a couple of changes. Simmons misses out and Roston Chase will make his international T20 debut. Hayden Walsh goes out and Jason Holder comes in for him. Also shares that Gayle will be opening the innings. |
We are set for the action to begin. Both the teams have walked out for the anthems. First, the national anthem of Bangladesh will be played followed by 'Rally 'round the West Indies', which is the cricketing anthem for West Indies. |
Right then. The pre-match formalities are done and we are set for the clash to get underway! Mahmudullah has his team in a huddle and has a few motivating words to say before they spread out on the field. The big man, Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis walk out to bat for the Windies. Mahedi Hasan is set to start with the ball. But first, both the teams and the umpires take a knee to support the Black Lives Matter movement. |
0.6 : Who will start from the other end? Taskin Ahmed is set to steam in. |
Change. Mustafizur Rahman comes on now. |

1.4 : Taskin Ahmed to Evin Lewis, Fuller in length and wide outside off, Lewis plays a mistimed drive towards mid off and wants to steal a run. Universe Boss says no. Evin needs to be careful with running between the wickets as Gayle is not the quickest. |
1.5 : Taskin Ahmed to Evin Lewis, Pitches it up and around off, Evin once again drives through the line, this time it's from the middle of the bat but the placement is not good. Straight to mid off. |
1.6 : Taskin Ahmed to Evin Lewis, FOUR! Three dot balls and Evin Lewis releases the pressure with a boundary. Taskin Ahmed serves it full and wide outside off, at 146 kph, Lewis gets the room to free his arms and he smashes it through the gap at extra cover for a boundary. Spoils a good over from Taskin. |
2.1 : Mustafizur Rahman to Chris Gayle, Direct hit and Chris Gayle would have been a goner! Mustafizur Rahman delivers it on a length close to off, Gayle taps it down to cover-point and looks for a run. He is midway down the track but Lewis sends him back. 2.5 : Mustafizur Rahman to Evin Lewis, Around off, angling in, Evin Lewis gets behind the line and blocks it back. |
2.6 : Mustafizur Rahman to Evin Lewis, OUT! CAUGHT! Evin Lewis departs. Clever deception from Mustafizur Rahman, something he is known for! Serves it on a length around middle and leg, at 126 kph, Evin Lewis tries to stay back and swing it over the leg side. But the ball arrives late to gather the toe end of the bat. It goes high in the air towards square leg, Mushfiqur Rahim comes running in and takes the skier safely. A big setback for West Indies as Lewis has been the only batsman for the |

4.2 : Mahedi Hasan to Chris Gayle, OUT! BOWLED 'EM! The sorry form of the Universe Boss continues and Mahedi Hasan has hit the jackpot. A slider around off, lands on a fuller length and skids on with the angle of the arm. Gayle plays all over it as he tries to swing it across the line. Misses the ball completely and the stumps behind are shattered. The West Indian batting under the pump yet again. |
Shimron Hetmyer is the next batter. |

0.0 : DRINKS! Bangladesh have done really well to keep West Indies right under the pump. They have scored just two boundaries so far and have lost 3 wickets. The skipper, Kieron Pollard along with Roston Chase is trying to revive the innings with their partnership but will have to start attacking sooner rather than later. The Bangladeshi bowlers will look to continue doing the good work and keep the momentum on their side. Can West Indies recover? Mustafizur Rahman is back on... |

12.1 : Taskin Ahmed to Kieron Pollard, NOT OUT! On a length, around off. Pollard plays it back to the bowler with his bat and pad close together. This is full, and outside off, Jason Holder makes room and creams a lofted drive towards deep extra cover. It was straight into Afif Hossain's hands but he puts down the catch. A single taken. |
18.6 : Shoriful Islam to Dwayne Bravo, On the pads, Dwayne Bravo misses his flick. The ball goes to square leg off his pads and the batters take a leg bye. A tremendous penultimate over by Shoriful, 4 runs and two wickets off it. |
19.1 : Mustafizur Rahman to Dwayne Bravo, OUT! CAUGHT! West Indies slip further! Good-length ball, angling across, outside off. Dwayne Bravo tries to free his arms and lift it over covers. But he gets no distance whatsoever. Soumya Sarkar is stationed at sweeper cover and takes a simple catch. |
19.2 : Mustafizur Rahman to Jason Holder, SIX! Jason Holder, you beauty! A gift from Mustafizur Rahman as he bowls a full toss, on leg. Jason Holder with sublime timing lofts it off his pads over deep square leg for a biggie. |
19.3 : Mustafizur Rahman to Jason Holder, SIX! Another one! Slower delivery, in the slot. Jason Holder was waiting for it and heaves it over deep mid-wicket for another maximum. He was dropped by Afif Hossain in the previous over and now is making Bangladesh pay for it. Valuable runs for West Indies! |
19.4 : Mustafizur Rahman to Jason Holder, Drags his length back, outside off. Jason Holder toe-ends this one to covers for a single. |
19.1 : Kieron Pollard walks out to bat to resume his innings. |
19.5 : Mustafizur Rahman to Kieron Pollard, Quicker delivery, angling across, outside off. Kieron Pollard looks to cut but misses. |
19.6 : Mustafizur Rahman to Kieron Pollard, SIX! BANG! Pollard finishes the innings with a maximum. Full and on leg, Kieron Pollard doesn't flinch a bit and simply flicks it with his powerful wrists over the cow corner fence. WEST INDIES FINISH WITH 142/7! |
A decent recovery in the end overs from West Indies and they have ended up with a challenging total on the board. 72 runs came in the last six overs, all thanks to a counter-attacking knock from Nicholas Pooran and a handy cameo from Jason Holder, as apart from them, all the other batters failed to come to terms with the nature of this surface. |
Bangladesh were brilliant with the ball in front of an intimidating batting lineup of the West Indies but will be a shade disappointed with the way they closed the innings. The Bangla Tigers kept a lid on the scoring rate for most parts of the innings and at the same time kept chipping away at the wickets. The Windies were not allowed to recover and Kieron Pollard getting retired hurt and Andre Russell bagging a diamond duck further jeopardised their situation. Although a slow knock from Roston |
Nicholas Pooran says that the wicket is quite challenging to bat on and to hit cross-batted shots is not at all easy. Adds that he is happy that he could contribute and get some runs for his team. Praises Bangladesh for the way they bowled in the Powerplay. Finishes by saying that he is quite happy with the total and this total of 142 looks like 160. |
It was yet another sorry batting show by West Indies. Right from the beginning, they struggled to find the fence and their openers were also not able to rotate the strike well. To compound their misery, both Evin Lewis and Chris Gayle departed in quick succession and West Indies managed only 29 runs in the Powerplay. The Men in Maroon hit only a couple of boundaries in the first 10 overs and that tells you the story of their batting plight. Mahedi Hasan and Shoriful Islam were the most success |
Right then, Bangladesh have 143 to chase down to stay alive in this tournament. Batting is not going to be easy and the Bangla Tigers would be thinking that they conceded 20-25 runs extra towards the end. Can their batsmen make up for it? Do join us in a short while to find out. |
