Starts by saying that it is the same pitch that was used in the 3rd ODI and there is a short boundary on one side of the square with a nice breeze blowing as well. 0.0 : UPDATE - 8.25 pm GMT - Reece Topley has taken a tumble on the followthrough and is down on the ground. He seems to be in some pain and the physio is out to have a look. Hopefully, he will be fine. Thankfully, Topley is up on his feet but is trudging off the field and the rain has started to fall down hard as well. The players are going off! There is sunshine and even a rainbow behind which means this shouldn't be much of a delay. Stay tuned for more updates. |
UPDATE - 8.33 pm GMT - Well then, it seems that the rain has stopped and the groundstaff is coming back onto the field probably to remove the covers. In all likeliness, we should get a prompt resumption but there's no official word yet from the umpires. However, given the fact that there has been plenty of rain in the last 48 hours, the mopping-up work is just taking a bit longer than usual which is delaying the restart. |
UPDATE - 8.45 pm GMT - Positive news coming from the ground! The game will resume at 9 pm GMT and no overs will be lost as there is a buffer of 60 minutes. The groundstaff is applying saw dust and a few other things as drying agents in one area near the boundary rope which seems to be damp. So, grab a cup of coffee and strap in as the action isn't far away. |

0.0 : Drinks break! England will be delighted with this start, though there will be concerns regarding Reece Topley who seems to have suffered yet another setback in his career. After opting to bowl first, the visitors have chipped away at the wickets but as long as Pooran and Russell are out there, they will not breathe easy. 0.0 : Well, quite an eventful first half of the game. From start to finish, there was no shortage of action and even the rain delay could not disrupt the flow. West Indies have finished on a high, scoring 53 runs off the last 6 overs to end with 182 on the board. Earlier, after being inserted into bat, West Indies were rocked early as Saqib Mahmood struck thrice in the Powerplay. Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell and Andre Russell took their chances during their stays and kept the momentum going for th |
At 117/8, the West Indies were in danger of failing to bat out the whole 20 overs but that was when their batting depth came to the rescue. Gudakesh Motie made his intentions clear with two sixes from his first two balls and unleashed a real assault. Motie contributed 33 off 14 in his 49-run stand with Romario Shepherd and that could turn out to be a defining partnership in the game. Motie fell but Shepherd ensured a strong finish for his side with a couple of lusty blows in the last over. |
Adil Rashid is in for a chat. He says that they bowled well as a group and did well to break partnerships. |
Right then, West Indies will be delighted to get to 182 considering the start they had and the position they found themselves in with 5 overs remaining in the innings. Only once has a 170-plus score been chased at this venue and it will be a record chase at this ground, if England pull it off. As the West Indies' innings progressed, the batting seemed to become a bit easier with the ball sliding onto the bat nicely under the lights and England will hope that is indeed the case. Back in a bit |

0.0 : The highest-ever successful run chase in a T20I game at the Kensington Oval! A resounding victory for England to kick off the five-match T20I series and if game 1 is anything to go by, we are in for a treat all throughout the series. |
Phil Salt's love affair with the Kensington Oval continues and on a ground where he spent a lot of his younger years, he has yet again put on a stellar performance with the bat, notching up his 3rd T20I ton as well. He was amply supported by young and feisty Jacob Bethell who too has a connection to this venue and Bethell picked up a half-century as well. The pair added 107 runs for the 3rd wicket in just 61 balls and completely hammered the opposition bowlers en route to victory. |
West Indies had the runs on the board and would have been decently happy at the halfway stage but England's batting in the Powerplay just blew them away. The hosts conceded 73 runs in the first 6 overs and picked up one wicket which did become two in the very next over but that was it. They just couldn't handle the heat from Salt and Bethell and succumbed to a hefty defeat. |
Earlier in the game, the returning English skipper, Jos Buttler opted to bowl first as there was moisture on the deck and Saqib Mahmood backed him up with a quick three-wicket burst early on. West Indies did counter through Nicholas Pooran but it was the lower order that did most of the damage as Russell, Shepherd and Motie all made scores of 30 plus and took the hosts to a fairly substantial total. Saqib ended up with a four-fer as Adil Rashid picked up 3 wickets as well. In reply, Phil Salt |
The Presentation ceremony... |
Phil Salt is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his stunning ton. He says that he enjoys batting here and has grown up playing on these surfaces. Mentions that it is important to adjust quickly to meet the demands of the tempo of T20 cricket. Shares that opening and closing of the grip has helped access different areas of the field. |
Rovman Powell, the captain of West Indies says that it is generally the way they play but it didn't come off tonight and yet they managed to get a decent total on board. Reckons that losing wickets in clusters is something they need to fix going forward and they still need to back themselves and play their brand of cricket. Adds that it is about the guys working on their individual skills with the ball and applauds Akeal Hosein for his tight bowling. Ends by appreciating the crowd as well. |
Right then, the first game of this long T20I series is done and dusted and it's advantage England early on, especially with the manner of this win but there's a long way to go. The next game will be played at the same venue and less than 24 hours later on Sunday, 10 November at 8 pm GMT. You can join us a lot sooner though for the build-up to that game. Cheers! |
The captain of England, Jos Buttler says that it was a fantastic performance and he is really delighted for the boys. Mentions that they know what to expect from West Indies and it is important that you keep taking wickets. Further says that if you allow the West Indies batters to spend time out in the middle, they can really hurt you. Appreciates Phil Salt by saying that he has taken his game to new heights and he is reaping the rewards of the work he has put in. |
