The state government, which had plans to set up a new technological university in the state, seems to have dropped the idea. Instead, the higher and technical education department is now planning to convert the Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, Raigad, in to the state’s technological university.

While all engineering colleges in the state will be affiliated to this university, the state also plans to implement common syllabus and bring the employability quotient of all engineering graduates at the same level.

The ministry had been contemplating setting up a new technological university in the state for a year. However, now converting an existing university seems to be the most feasible option.

Higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope said, “We already have a technological university in place and it seems to be the best feasible option. With little modifications in the law and with a sanction of few new posts, we can make use of the existing infrastructure and resources. We have already taken approval from the chief minister’s office, but are yet to present the proposal in the cabinet.”

The university will have sub-centres across the state. It will be the only self-sustainable technological university in the state. Few posts of the directors of its sub-centres need to be sanctioned.
Currently, Ambedkar university is just a standalone university, which consists of eight engineering departments that include courses in chemical, mechanical, petrochemical, civil, electrical, engineering, etc.

The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in core engineering disciplines. Once the university is converted to the state’s technological university, all engineering, pharmacy, architecture and hotel management institutes will be affiliated to the university. The state has around 220 engineering institutes, 110 pharmacy institutes, and around 44 colleges of architecture.

According to an official from the higher and technical education department, the Ambedkar university in Lonere, which is an autonomous university, will have a curriculum equipped with the latest technology developments in the field.

“There are a lot of variations in terms of placements in the state. While students from college A get the best placements in the city, students from college B barely get any good placements. There is a lot of disparity, which the department will try to get rid of. By ensuring a common syllabus and good quality of faculty, the state will try to bring about a standard quality of engineering pass-outs, thus increasing the employability quotient of our students,” said the official.
