The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is working on a proposal which will enable the introduction of a one-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme in India, as is the practice is some other countries.

The proposal is at a preliminary stage and the modalities are being drawn up.

“The AICTE is contemplating the introduction of a one-year MBA. We are working on the details. It may take a month or so before the plan is ready,” said SS Mantha, acting chairman, AICTE. An all-India board will look at suggestions from various stakeholders.

Recently, representatives of private higher education institutions had met Kapil Sibal, minister for human resource & development regarding the same.

But the proposal being drawn up may not allow private institutes to start a one-year MBA course. “It is a feasible concept that has to be explored and linked to the university system. Institutes affiliated to a university will be allowed to start the course. But those which are not affiliated to any university won’t be permitted,” said Mantha.

“A one-year MBA course requires continuous training and assessment. It requires dedicated faculty and linkage with the industry. Checking of quality matrix is a crucial issue. Hence, private management institutes that are not attached to any university may not be allowed to introduce it as it will be difficult to keep a check on such institutes,” said another official.
Experts said that a one-year programme will be particularly useful for those candidates with work experience.

“A one-year MBA can be a powerful programme for people who have worked three to five years in the industry,” said Rajan Saxena, vice-chancellor, NMIMS.
