Common Admission Test (CAT) — the computerised test the IIMs, IITs, FMS, IISc and many other institutes in the country and abroad use as part of their screening procedure for students vying for business administration programmes — may be made available twice in a year.

In fact, organisers of the reputed test said discussions were on about the probable twice-a-year pattern for the convenience of working class aspirants who must wait for an entire year, should they miss the only chance.

CAT-2011 ended on a good note and the candidates are now awaiting their results on January 11, 2012.

Busy trying to bring out the result on time, CAT organisers have along with started discussing the plan of action for the next year.

With an increasing number of institutes wanting to consider CAT score for admissions, the number of candidates wanting to appear for CAT is also rising.

“There is a significant number of candidates who are working and would want to take CAT for their professional development. However, with a routine professional life to attend to, taking CAT for them is a slightly difficult as compared to fresh graduates. Such candidates are often likely to miss the yearly chance to take CAT. Hence, the discussion to make CAT available for twice a year,” said an IIM official.

Confirming that the discussions have indeed begun, Prof. Jankiraman Moorthy, Convenor for CAT 2011 said, “We are discussing to make CAT available twice in a year, especially for the sake of the working class candidates.”

However, stating that the discussions were in their nascent stage and “nothing is finalised now”, Moorthy added, “We would be able to talk on details like, testing pattern, timing of the second testing session etc., only in a year when the ongoing discussions are expected to finally conclude.”

Post-CAT 2010 test last year, there were talks too that a candidate would be able to take CAT any time of the year. But, Moorthy, who is currently the CAT convenor, said, “As far as I know, the discussions are about making CAT available twice a year and not throughout.”

Amit Suvarna, a working professional wanting to take CAT next year, said, “If the exam is made available twice a year, it would certainly be positive. For, there are institutes abroad as well that consider the CAT score at the time of admissions. So, candidates can take CAT depending on which semester (Fall/ Spring) they are applying for.”
