Over a lakh Dawoodi Bohras from all over the world have congregated in the city to listen to discourses being delivered by Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the spiritual head of the community, during Moharram.

The event is being held in Marol for the first time and will see Syedna narrating the tragic martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, in Karbala, Iraq. The discourses start from 10.15 and go on till 2.30 pm.

Dawoodi Bohras mourn the 10-day Moharram period during which they remember the battle of Karbala where Imam Husain sacrificed his life for the cause of Islam and humanity. The period began on December 16 and is expected to end on December 26.
“Dawoodi Bohras from all over India, South Asia, East Africa, Europe, America and Australia have gathered in the city for the discourses.

The visiting members are being accommodated in batches of 23,000 per day in the precincts of the Marol mosque to enable them hear the discourses.

“We have also set up 45 centres all across Mumbai where live speeches by him can be heard. On Tuesday, almost two lakh people heard him,” said Shaikh Abdeali Yamani, Syedna’s executive secretary. Lodging, boarding and eating arrangements have been made for all those from outside Mumbai.
