Boy with cerebral palsy tops MPSC in Pune

Hansraj Patil has topped the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) exam in the sports quota, for the results declared in May 2011. What makes this success special is that Hansraj, in spite of suffering from cerebral palsy, appeared in the open category and has stood first.

Hansraj's achievement doesn't come as a surprise. A Chhatrapati award winner, the highest recognition for a sportsman in the state, Hansraj has proved himself a swimmer par excellence. From winning medals at the Special Olympics in the United Kingdom in 2006 to winning national and state titles, Hansraj has ruled the waters. Children with cerebral palsy, have muscular and immunity problems. But with medication and exercise, Hansraj has become independent. He uses crutches and even drives his special two-wheeler.

Hansraj's mother, Uma Patil, had spotted her child's condition when he was three. She gave up her career as a lecturer to help Hansraj become independent. "It has been the grit, effort and determination of Hansraj that has brought him this far," said Uma.
At his interview, Hansraj was asked how he would cope, given the fact that he walks with two sticks. He replied, "I will definitely manage and I have abilities to do so. As for my two sticks, next time I meet you, you shall find me using only one stick."

Hansraj is a role model for youngsters. Hansraj, selected as Naib Tehsildar, is studying for his MPSC class I officers' exam. "My ultimate aim is IAS. These exams will give me the necessary experience in them in 2012, after proper preparation, I will appear for UPSC exam," he said.
