Senior officials from BPCL visited the Mahul refinery unit on Thursday to take stock of the situation.
A day after the deadly fire at its refinery in Chembur which left 45 people injured, the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has decided to form a committee to probe into the massive blaze. The fire had left 45 workers injured and wastage of natural resources.
Senior officials from BPCL visited the Mahul refinery unit on Thursday to take stock of the situation. They checked the existing safety measures and whether there was need to further increase the safety measures at the unit.
BPCL spokesperson S S Sundararajan said that they are in the process of forming an enquiry committee to investigate the cause of the fire. "By tomorrow, the committee will be formed to investigate the cause of fire," Sundararajan said.
The committee is expected to submit its report within a fortnight. "Apart from the cause, the committee will also recommend safety measures for the refinery," said Sundararajan. The spokesperson added that BPCL has a sound safety measures at all the plants.
A total of 45 people got injured in the fire, following a blast at the state-run Bharat Petroleum refinery on Wednesday afternoon. The blast occurred around 2.45 pm at the hydrocracker plant of the unit on Mahul Road.
At the time of the blast, it contained around 72 tonnes of liquid hydrocarbon, which is used to generated diesel.
The explosion was so huge that the tremors rocked residential and commercial complexes within a radius of one kilometre at in Kurla, Govandi and Deonar area.
