The speaker of the state assembly, Dilip Walse-Patil, who has been playing the headmaster’s role in the ongoing budget session and has been reprimanding members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) whenever possible, has another warning for them on Wednesday — please do not bring guns and firearms to Vidhan Bhavan.

The speaker said that no member was allowed to carry any type of weapons in the house and any such act by the MLAs would not be tolerated. He made the remark while citing information received by his office from the security personnel of the state assembly which said that the incidences of members carrying such weapons were being noticed by the security personnel.

On March 17, Nationalist Congress Party MLC Ramesh Shendge shocked the house when he raised a point saying that the baggage X-ray scanning machine installed at the gates of Vidhan Bhavan depicted images of revolver in the scanned bags even though the bags of visitors actually did not contain any.

Raising a point of order, Shendge said when his PA came to the assembly with his bag in the morning, he was delayed for a few minutes as the security staff told him that the X-ray machine showed a revolver in the bag. But nothing was found.

‘’When I asked the security personnel about it, they told me that the baggage scanning machine was tuned to show images of weapons like revolvers, etc where there were actually none in the bag just to check the alertness of the staff, I was shocked,’’ Shendge told the upper house. It later turned out to be a mock drill.

Walse-Patil has expressed dismay over the unruly and undisciplined behavior of the members on many occassions.

Earlier in the day, he warned the members from the ruling benches over the poor attendance in the house during the reply to the debate by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday. He said that the attendance in the treasury benches was lesser than that from the opposition benches, leaving the ruling parties in a minority, which was not acceptable.

“The members who do not take any interest in the replies by ministers, should not ask for the opportunity to talk in the house during debates. The members from the ruling parties should ensure that the majority in the attendance is maintained in the house through the end of the business,” he said. He also warned MLAs to not sit on the steps of Vidhan Bhavan in protest over any issue without his permission.

The speaker and the leader of opposition Eknath Khadse also had a verbal clash in the house. When the leader of opposition told the speaker that he would not follow the directives regarding the time limit of the debate, the speaker reminded him of the manner in which the speaker should be spoken to.
