A proposal to display the number of normal deliveries and cesarean (c-section) deliveries in BMC hospitals has been proposed in the BMC committee meeting.

The notice of motion has been moved by BMC corporator Kishori Pednekar after she received complaints from citizens about an increase in the number of c-section deliveries in civic-run hospitals. The proposal will be heard in the first week of October at the committee meeting.

City-based health activist states that it will be a positive move to analyse the cases of c-section deliveries. According to Pednekar, she had proposed this move in August, 2018.

Kishori Pednekar, corporator of ward number 199 in Lower Parel, said, "The number of normal and c-section delivery in civic-run hospitals will help us to understand whether the number is increasing and reasons behind it. It will help to analyse the data. If we see the data in civic-run hospitals, the number of c-section delivery has increased rapidly in comparison to a decade ago."

City-based researcher Subarna Ghosh, who filed an online petition on the high rate of C-section deliveries, said, "It is a welcome move to see that elected representative, the people in power are taking up the issue for which the citizens have been raising their voice and are struggling to be heard. If this gets implemented this can be a trendsetter to set an example."

According to a Right To Information (RTI) data given by BMC's public health department, In 2007, there was 26,537 c-section delivery. In 2015, there was 56,209 c-section delivery. The RTI also stated that since 2016, the BMC is carrying out registration of birth and death in CRS system software of central government due to which they don't have data about the normal and c-section delivery since 2016.

Pednekar added, "If the new technology and equipment are coming up over the year, there should have been more number of normal delivery and a decrease in the number of c-section delivery."

In civic-run hospital, normal delivery charges are approximately between approximately Rs 0 to Rs 500 depending upon cases to case and their treatment. While the c-section cost between approximately Rs 500 to Rs 1500 depending upon case to case basis.
