Wajid Shaikh, who was caught in Pune by a state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team, has told the police that he had fled home with two others as they were being constantly harassed by the family of another missing person, Ayaz Sultan. Sultan's family allegedly used to constantly ask Wajid and the other two his whereabouts as they all used to hang out together, sources said.
Sultan had gone missing on October 30, while Wajid, Noor Mohammed and Mohsin Shaikh had fled on December 15.
An ATS officer, who grilled Wajid, said, "Sultan, Wajid, Noor Mohammed and Mohsin knew each other and used to meet regularly during namaaz. After Sultan went missing, his family began questioning the three. As per Wajid, the family was harassing them, which is why they left."
The trio had left together but got separated three days ago, after going from one place to another, he added.
As per the ATS source, Sultan's action is the most suspicious. "He seems to be a hardliner. His exact location is not known yet. Wajid said he and the other two have not been in touch with Sultan since October 30. Wajid was also inclined towards radical views, we do not know to what extent he has gone into it. We are probing how much of what he has told us is true," the officer said.
The ATS has not yet given a clean chit to Wajid, and sources in the agency said the reason he and his wife Bilkis had quarrelled was being probed.
According to police sources, sometime after their marriage, Wajid had told Bilkis that they need to do something for Islam and would often behave like a radical. "Bilkis was not happy with that, which led to regular fights between them. We are probing whether Wajid was indeed radicalised. And because he knew Sultan and Mohsin, we are questioning him to ascertain whether they had planned to leave together," said an ATS officer.
However, Wajid's relative Aslam alleged that it was Bilkis who had first talked to the media about Wajid having left to join the IS. Aslam also claimed that Wajid was facing harassment from Bilkis and her family.
