Apple has silently released a new app for iOS that lets business owners and event managers map out their venues using just their iPhones. Indoor Survey App, as it's called, was first spotted on iTunes by developer Steve Troughton-Smith, though the app doesn't appear in search.

The app lets you "enable indoor position within a venue", as the description reads. You can drop location markers called "points" on the map, marking your location as you walk through the venue. The app then uses radio frequency (RF) signals, along with sensor data from your iPhone, to create an indoor positioning system.

This new app builds on the other indoor mapping tools Apple has been developing for a while now. iOS 8 last year brought more detailed location data to developers using the iPhone's motion sensors, and Apple Maps COnnect was launched last year, that allowed public venues to submit indoor mapping information. This, however, was only for large venues open to the public, with WiFi access.

The Indoor Survey App could possibly expand that service, offering it to smaller businesses as well.
