Nestled on the hills overlooking the Mediterranean city of Nice, Villa Leopolda stands as an epitome of luxury and grandeur and is renowned as the third largest and one of the most expensive mansions in the world worth nearly $750 million (Rs 6272 crore). Notably, Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani's residence in Mumbai, Antilia is touted as the world's most expensive private residence worth Rs 15,000 crore.

Brazilian philanthropist Lily Safra, the widow of Lebanese banker William Safra, owns Villa Leopolda. The sprawling 50-acre estate features a massive greenhouse, a swimming pool and pool house, an outdoor kitchen, and numerous other attractions.

Historical Significance

Villa Leopolda has a rich history, commissioned originally by King Leopold II of Belgium for his lover, Caroline Lacroix. During World War I, it served as a military hospital. In the 1920s, American architect Ogden Codman Jr. transformed it into a Neo-Palladian masterpiece, combining royal heritage with contemporary architectural finesse.

Architectural and Design Marvel

The villa boasts 19 luxurious rooms, 14 bathrooms, 12 swimming pools and a 400-square-meter room. It includes vintage items, a helipad, massive terraces, sports courts, a game room, and a movie theatre. The interiors are adorned with exported marble and antique artwork, making it a significant piece of European heritage.The villa's living room is a blend of classical and modern luxury, decorated with majestic deluxe pieces and vintage furniture. The 19 master-bedroom suites, with their 14 elegantly designed bathrooms, feature premium products and realistic designs. The bedrooms, dominated by vintage designs with red and creamy hues, wooden ceilings, and cemented rock walls, exude a perfect blend of elegance and comfort. The wooden chairs with golden outlines, photo frames, and white clocks add to the villa's luxurious ambiance.

Recent Ownership and Enhancements

After being owned by several prominent figures, including Fiat and Ferrari owner Giovanni Agnelli, the villa was purchased by banker Edmond Safra. Following his death, his widow, Lily Safra, became the owner. In 2008, Russian tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov acquired Villa Leopolda for 300 million euros. Each owner has added their touch to the property, maintaining its classical art pieces and luxurious appeal.
