In the region of Anantnag, Kashmir, lies the ancient Martand Sun Temple, built 1300 years ago. Today, it stands in ruins, hinting at its former grandeur. However, the story of the king who built it, Lalitaditya Muktapida, is even more interesting.

Born in 699 AD, Lalitaditya belonged to the Nagvanshi Karkota Kayastha Dynasty. His family, renowned for their courage, had long served in the Kashmir army. Lalitaditya's birth name was Muktapida, and he had two elder brothers, Chandrapida and Tarapida.

Lalitaditya ascended the throne in 724 AD, during a time of western invasions in India. The Arab ruler Mohammad Bin Qasim threatened Kashmir and central India. Lalitaditya led his army to defeat various regional rulers and protect Kashmir.

His conquests extended beyond India. Lalitaditya invaded Turkestan through Kabul and conquered regions in the west and south of India, including Maharashtra, Pallavas, and Kalinga.

He even reached central China, earning comparisons to Alexander the Great. Under his rule, Kashmir saw immense wealth and development, including the construction of temples and infrastructure.

The Martand Sun Temple, dedicated to the sun god Surya, was built by Lalitaditya in the 8th century. Though destroyed by ruler Sikandar Shah Miri, its ruins still showcase the blend of Gandharan, Gupta, and Chinese architectural styles. Located five miles from Anantnag, it is now a protected monument, preserving a piece of Kashmir’s rich history.
