Vitamin D toxicity: 10 side effects of having too much Vitamin D

Sonali Sharma

Vitamins and minerals are essential for maintaining good health.

Vitamin D, crucial for bone health and immune function, can be obtained from various sources.

Vitamin D toxicity occurs when there are excessive amounts of vitamin D in the body. This usually happens due to over-supplementation rather than diet or sun exposure

The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in the blood, known as hypercalcemia

Symptoms of extremely high vitamin D intake include weakness, fatigue, depression, confusion, stupor or coma, polyuria (excessive urination).

Symptoms of extremely high vitamin D intake also includes -- nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), renal failure, calcifications in soft tissues, conjunctivitis (often called pink eye), fever, chills, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and constipation.

Overconsumption of Vitamin D supplements can increase the risk of overdosing and putting your health in danger.

The symptoms of vitamin D toxicity can vary depending on the severity of the condition. In its early stages, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness, and weight loss.

These symptoms may not be specific and can mimic other conditions, making diagnosis challenging

In more severe cases, excessive vitamin D can lead to hypercalcemia, characterized by elevated levels of calcium in the blood.

Symptoms of hypercalcemia may include confusion, disorientation, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and kidney damage
