US President Joe Biden has nominated Vice President Kamala Harris as the Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party. If approved at the Democratic Party convention, Harris would become the first US presidential candidate of Indian origin. After that, if she wins the November election, she will become the first woman and Indian-origin President of the US.

"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," Biden tweeted minutes after dropping out from US Presidential race.

Earlier, Biden said in a statement that he will end his candidacy for re-election, saying "it is in the best interest of my party and the country". The 81-year-old president's decision comes four months before Americans go to the polls on November 5.

Biden's decision follows weeks of intense pressure from fellow Democrats after a disastrous presidential debate performance against his Republican rival and former US president Donald Trump at the end of June.
