With the state board examinations round the corner, a few city education activists have taken up the issue copying in examination. They have written a letter to the deputy director of education for a copy free examination. They have also suggested ways by which students can be prevented from using unfair means at the examination centre.

Each year, hundreds of students are expelled for copying and are caught using unfair means in school secondary certificate (SSC) and higher secondary certificate (HSC) examination at various examination centres across the state. The education board has a number of ways to prevent copying in the examination, however, the cases of copying and mass copying at few centres have been reported in the past. Anuj Kumar Pandey, secretary of All India Federation of Parent Teachers Association, believes that a few measures need to be taken to stop the practice completely. Pandey has written a letter to the deputy director of education requesting him to take important steps to stop it.

According to Sudhir Dani, an educational activist, there is a myth about copying which was purposely spread that only students are involved. "People believe that only students are involved in copying and it takes place only in rural areas. The fact is that exam malpractices occur equally in urban areas and educational hubs in Navi Mumbai," says Dani.

Dani also infomred that there are three types of copying widely practiced. Copy by students, teachers and supervisor sponsored copy and educational institute/centre level mass copy. "I have come across a student who expressed his grievances that in a city, special treatment is given to teachers and politicians kids," added Dani.

Dani says that both students and teachers are equally interested in individual percentage and of school results. "It's good but instead of putting hard work throughout the year, efforts are put up only in three hours of exam which is very pathetic," say Dani.

According to him, it should be mandatory that subject teacher should be present at the at Tehsil office during the examination. There should be lottery based allotment of supervisors in presence of parent's representative. Home centre concept should also be totally abolished and use technology like CCTV should be done in the exam halls.
