As part of celebrations to mark completion of 56 years, the National Book Trust (NBT), founded by the Government of India, has decided to get a new logo —one that reflects harmony of tradition and innovation, earthiness and imagination. Interestingly, this new face of NBT has an Amdavadi connect. It has been designed by city’s premier design institute— National Institute of Design (NID).

The logo was unveiled by union minister for human resource development MM Pallam Raju at a function in New Delhi on Thursday. The trust promotes reading habits by conducting various exhibitions and seminars.

Prof Tarun Deep Girdher, a faculty at graphic design, and his team designed the new logo, ‘nbt.india’. It shows a banyan tree that symbolises stability and the leaves are designed to resemble an open book.

Girdher said that the combination of red and earth brown colour conveys that it is firmly rooted in the Indian soil and has the urge for knowledge.

“This time, since NID has designed the logo, it is strategically called ‘nbt.india’. This indicates the modernist commitment of the organisation, which is engaged in preparing the readers for a future world. NBT could be anywhere in the world. So, when we say nbt.india, we are specifying the place.

He quoted the union minister as saying that NID and NBT should join hands to design and set up model libraries that could encourage students to read.
