The government on Tuesday assured the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) that it would consider the request for extending the Rs10 lakh subsidy from the present 50 Kannada movies a year to 75.

At present, the state government extends Rs10 lakh subsidy to only 50 films in a year, while Sandalwood produces about 130 to 150 films annually. Citing various reasons, KFCC wanted this limit to be extended to at least 75 films. The government has submitted a proposal in this regard to the finance department and it is likely to get a go-ahead soon.

After receiving a memorandum from the KFCC delegation — led by chairman Basanthkumar Patil — home minister R Ashoka said, “The state government will make an official announcement about the extension of subsidy for 75 films in the upcoming budget,” he assured.

KFCC also demanded for an upgradation of the Kanteerava Studio and wants it available exclusively for film production activities. At present, the studio is being used only by television channels because of which the film industry is facing a lot of problems. The delegation urged the government to add at least two more floors to it and modernise the facilities.

“In Sandalwood, every year only 4% of the producers get their money back. Film producers are under immense stress. The state government should give them an exemption from VAT. Currently, the state charges 5% VAT on film activities, it should be exempted like in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharastra,” Patil said.
KFCC has also demanded exemption on show tax. “The government is charging show tax for all Kannada movies like other language movies. The Anti-Piracy Act is pending before the president of India for the past two years and the state government should pressurise her for a speedy clearance. Piracy is killing the Kannada film industry,” Patil said.
