In a move to appease state employees before the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Yogi Adityanath government on Tuesday announced to double the House Rent Allowance (HRA) and City Compensatory Allowance (CCA) with effect from July 1, 2018.

About 15 lakh state employees, who had threatened to launch an agitation, will be benefitting from the hike in HRA and CCA. A decision to this effect was taken on Tuesday during the State Cabinet meeting.

The double hike in HRA would put an extra burden of Rs 2,223 crore and Rs 175 crore for the CCA on the State Exchequer. The State Cabinet has also passed amendments into their 7th Pay Commission salary discrepancies pending since 2016.

Besides this, the Yogi Cabinet also approved to increase the reservation for divyangs (differently-abled) in government jobs from 3 per cent to 4 per cent. The government has also decided to divide their physical disability into four categories — in order to ensure that they benefit from reservation and other government facilities.

The state cabinet has also approved to lower the education qualification for the recruitment of firemen in fire services to intermediate. "It will create more jobs for rural 12th pass youth," said Chief Secretary Dr Anoop Chancdra Pandey.

Learning its lessons from the Anpara D tragedy, last year, in which employees, including three General Manager rank officials, were killed, the state cabinet has sanctioned Rs 649 crore to set-up a de-sulfurising unit to generate its own fuel gas for running the power plant.
