Over 100 BJP workers were detained today after they tried to disrupt rail traffic in South Gujarat region during an agitation led by BJP MP from Navasri CR Patil, demanding more trains for the state, police said.

The activists were picked up when people, mostly BJP men, lay on the tracks at Surat, Navsari and Valsad railway stations obstructing traffic and delaying a goods train, an inter-city express and a couple of Mumbai-bound trains, they said.

Those taken into custody include Surat district BJP president Prunesh Modi, Navsari president Premchand Lalwani, Kanjibahi Patel and Thakore Patel from Valsad district, police said.

The agitation was called off a few hours after it began this morning and Patil said that his message has been conveyed to the people and the Union government which had ignored the South Gujarat region.

He, however, threatened to launch a large-scale stir if people's demand for new trains, more stoppage for existing trains at various stations of South Gujarat and improving railway infrastructure in the region, among others demands are not met in the coming days.

Heavy police force was deployed at all railway station in South Gujarat in the view of the agitation call.
