On Wednesday, it was a day of learning for 30 cops of Ahmedabad (rural). Away from their daily routine of interrogating or chasing criminals, they were trying to learn how to become good cops. They learnt quite a few lessons on how to become people-friendly and change their image in the public at a one-day workshop, held in the office of
Superintendent of Police (rural) at Sarkhej. Three psychologists delivered lectures at the event, organised by Shri Girnari Seva, a charitable trust.

Psychologists Ashwin Jansari, head of department of psychology at Gujarat University, Rakesh Mehta and Shruti Joshi delivered lecturers on different aspects of cops’ job profile and many related aspects.

“There are three chains which play important part for any professionals. These chains are
relationship with your superiors, colleagues and subordinates. One must have a very good rapport with each one of these. Next comes family and public dealing. If you don’t have good relationship with you family, it will affect your public dealing,” said Jansari.

“For relationship development, there are four factors which play important roles. These are physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. If you have problem with any of these factors, it will hamper you growth and behaviour as well. And these factors directly affect the above-mentioned three chains. If you want to understand public and yourselves, you must have to take care of all these aspects,” Jansari said.

After the workshop DySP MM Malik said, “This was really exciting and motivational because we also believe that there is a need to change the face of police force. We must develop an approach suited to people at large. We need to upgrade ourselves according to the changes taking place nowadays. Because everything has changed in the last couple of decades but the process of policing by and large remains the same.”

PSI RH Gadhiya echoed similar views when he said that even police need motivation to become friendlier with the public. There should not be any discrimination based on hierarchy of caste, creed or class. Such workshops definitely help a lot, he said.
