Students were protesting the management’s decision to terminate the services of the principal.
Authorities of Manekbaug-based Sidharth Girl School, who ought to be mentors to the school students, allegedly turned their tormentors on Saturday. As many as 10 injured students were brought to the VS hospital after they were thrashed by the school authorities. Twenty other students are also learnt to have received minor injures.
The only guilt of the school students was that they were protesting against the school management's decision to terminate the services of principal Hasumati Patel.
The students are out of danger and were released after treatment at the hospital. It is learnt that one Vinod Patel, a trustee of the school, along with five other unidentified persons allegedly locked 30 students in a classroom and beat them up with dusters.
"The authorities want to close the school because the number of students is declining every year. But this has nothing to do with the principal. In order to close the school, the authorities sacked her, alleging that she doesn't cooperate with the trustees," said a student.
Despite repeated attempts, school authorities were not available for their comments.
Sources said a non-cognisable complaint has been filed at the Satellite police station. Police inspector HB Jamod said, "A 14-year-old girl did give a complaint. She questioned the school authorities why the services of the principal were terminated and sought her reinstatement.
Angered by this, the trustee of the school, along with others beat up the students. So, a case has been registered and we are investigating the matter."
District education officer RR Rathod has ordered a probe into the matter and appointed DC Raval as the investigator.
According to sources, till last year two schools were running simultaneously on the school premises - Sidharth Boys' School and Sidharth Girls' School. But the trustees closed the boys' school with the permission of DEO. They cited the declining number of students for the closure of the school. Sources said the authorities now want to close the girls' school as well, and start some commercial activity on its land.
