Awareness is the key to check the killer disease, cancer's, rapid progress — all speakers at the seminar on National Cancer Control at the Civil hospital on Sunday were unanimous on the topic.

Speaking at the event, Gujarat governor Dr Kamla Beniwal said that the society, right from the school level, should be made more informed about the disease.

Minister for healthJaynarayan Vyas, chairman of Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute Pankaj Patel and director of Gujarat Cancer Society Dr Pankaj Shah besides more than 300-odd doctors from various states of the country attended the seminar.

Changing food habits along with foodstuff with higher chemical content from overuse of pesticides and chemical fertilizers are the main causes of cancer, said Dr Beniwal, asking doctors to find out ways to prevent spread of this disease.

Vyas launched health passport in an attempt to make people more health conscious. Around 20,000 health passports were distributed on Sunday. The passport is similar to passport used for foreign travel, but it will have all health related details of the person. The passport can be obtained from government hospital and the person should fill in the details after body check-up.

"Such passport will make the person more updated about his health," the minister said. Reiterating the state government's commitment to make Gujarat health and free of diseases, Vyas said that the government is promoting medical tourism to achieve that aim.

Vyas said that besides the addition of new seats in medical colleges, more than a dozen new medical colleges would come up in the state. Vyas, who also expected that the shortage of paramedical staff would over within five years, informed the gathering that nursing seats have been double to 850 from 425 within two years.

Stating  that the Civil hospital along with other civil hospitals in the state would be modernised, Vyas said that the capacity of  UN Mehta Institute has been take to 450 beds from 250 beds and Rs66 crore have been invested in Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute for diagnosis, treatment and research of cancer.

Pankaj Patel, chairman of Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute, said that the seminar on would be a major factor in bringing awareness about cancer in the country.  Dr Pankaj Shah, director
of Gujarat Cancer Society, said that Sanjivani Rath, which is well-equipped with doctors and state of the art equipments, has been started by the society. The rath would reach to district level to provide treatment to the cancer patients.
