Sri Lankan refugees look to TN government for help

Sri Lankan refugees staying at various camps in the district today urged the Tamil Nadu Government to provide financial support and other facilities for their children to continue their education after plus two.

In a memorandum submitted to Minister for Adidravidar Welfare A. Tamilarasi, they said that their children were finding it difficult to join higher studies after completing plus two and requested government to help them pursue studies.

The memorandum said many houses at the camp were in a bad condition and had developed cracks.

They said several refugees in Anaiyur, Uchapatti and Samayanallur camps were suffering from fever with symptoms of chikun gunya.

The refugees also demanded that they be given car and bus driving licenses so that they could earn their livelihood and requested Chief Minister to include them under medical insurance scheme.

The camps lacked basic amenities like drinking water, drainage and toilet, the memorandum said.

Later Tamilarasi told newsmen that a report on the condition of the camps and grievances of the refugees would be submitted to the government.
