The family of sepoy Diwakar Daduram Faltankar is shattered. For, they cannot see him this Diwali. The 25-year-old soldier from Vadodara sacrificed his life while fighting with terrorists in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday evening. His body will be brought to the city on Wednesday.

Diwakar was a soldier with Rashtriya Rifles, a counterinsurgency force under the ministry of defence. He was posted at Baramulla. According to the family members, Diwakar had joined the force about six years ago. He was married just seven months back.

His regiment had received information that some terrorists were hiding at Ladu area, under the jurisdiction of Panjla police station. On the basis of the information, Diwakar, accompanied by his colleagues, reached the spot and cordoned off the area.

Once the area was cordoned off, the terrorists started firing at the soldiers. Though the soldiers retaliated, three of them - Diwakar, Lance Naik Bharat Singh and Riflemen Ram Sharma - were severely injured. All the three soldiers were shifted to a hospital at Srinagar, about 60 km from the spot. And Diwakar died during treatment on Monday evening.

A soldier from the regiment called up a neighbour of Diwakar in Vadodara and informed about Diwakar's sacrifice to his family members. Diwakar's body will be brought to Vadodara in a special flight on Wednesday and the cremation will done soon after.

Diwakar's family stays at Tulsi ni chal in Salatwada area of Vadodara. His family consists of his wife Ayushi, father Daduram, a rickshaw driver, and his two brothers - Ravi and Bhavesh, who are into hoardings business. Diwakar married Ahmedabad-based Ayushi about seven months ago.

Diwakar's father Daduram told DNA: “We were expecting him during Diwali. He had visited Vadodara just two months ago. And we talked to him about two days ago. During the talk, he told us not to call him for two to three days as he was on an operation. He was expecting a transfer posting in near future."

According to the family members, Diwarkar had earlier survived miraculously twice. Once he was deployed at the border and was in charge of a rocket-launcher. As he was to fire the launcher, a fellow soldier took the charge of it at the last moment. There was some technical problem in the launcher and the launcher itself exploded in which the soldier died.

In an another incident, when his regiment was moving to a distant place,  soldiers took turn to drive the vehicle. During the journey, Diwakar also drove but soon after he handed over the steering to his fellow soldier, terrorists fired at the vehicle and the driver died on the spot. On Tuesday, Army officials from Vadodara's EME visited Diwakar's house. Sources said the soldier would be cremated with military honours.
