Photographer Shahid Datawala has once again focused his camera on an interesting aspect of Mumbai. In his upcoming exhibition Where the city rests, Shahid has walked the length of the city to capture some very interesting photographs.

One of the photographs of the collection shows a few pristine white pillows lying amidst debris of a construction site.

Shahid says, “I don’t know whether I landed there at the right time or the wrong, as I think that place was some kind of a mating joint and they had to run away from there for some reason and didn’t get enough time to carry the pillows.” He adds, “Similarly, every photograph in the display narrates a story and it depends on the viewer what they want to think about it.”

Most of Shahid’s works comment on different aspects of the city. And this one also talks about the urge of the megapolis to find a place to rest. Obviously there is a strong influence of Bollywood but people here are far more hard-working and ambitious,” asserts Shahid. He continues, “Basically, the city never really rests.” The idea of working on this aspect of the city occurred to Shahid when he was working on his earlier project.

Though, completely different from what Shahid has done earlier, his upcoming show is a departure from what he generally does. He says, “Though, I wouldn’t like to reveal too much, my next show is about leftovers.”

The show is ongoing at the Matthieu Foss gallery, Ballard Estate, up to March 13.
