Sumeet Nagdev, who is set to perform at his dance company’s annual show Ahsas with his troupe tonight, is elated to be invited to one of the most prestigious dance festivals around the world — the American Dance Festival’s International Choreographers Residency Programme in North Carolina in July.

This programme invites talented international choreographers from all over the world for a dance exchange, where they create new work and enhance the choreographers’ skills in arts management. The six-and-a-half-week-long session ends with dance performances. “It’s a hub for dancers. We will have discussions and interactions on various dance forms from across the world. We will be auditioning dancers during the programme and at the end we will put up a dance performance too,” says Nagdev.

Nagdev is one of the youngest dancers from India to be invited to the programme. Earlier, dancers like Mallika Sarabhai, Astad Deboo, Bharat Sharma and Daksha Sheth have attended the same festival. “I am not as experienced as these great dancers but I feel proud to be invited to such a huge event. I am going there to learn,” he says.

Sumeet Nagdev, who runs his own dance company, has been working towards not only choreography but also giving professional dance training to artistes.  He feels that instead of creating hype around dance on television, efforts should be made to bring dance education into focus.

“For adults who have toiled hard, television dance shows are a great opportunity to further their careers. But most kids dance to be on TV these days.  Dance is an education and not a way to get on to TV,” he says, adding, “I am working really hard to see to it that there are professional certification and degree courses in contemporary dance.”

Sumeet is, in fact, all set to do a contemporary dance performance tonight. It is inspired by the story of Sumeet’s friend who got into drug addiction and later died. “The dance moves represent the various emotions he went through in his life. We will be doing some really difficult dance movements to portray those emotions,” he says.

Sumeet and his troupe perform at Ravindra Natya Mandir at 7 and 9 pm today.
