Inaugurated in August last year, the Mumbai University's first subcentre in Thane is all set to complete a year. The centre is first such branch of the University. The three-storey subcentre was built on a 60,000 sq ft area on the MU's plot, which spreads across 6.5-acre, at Balkum.

In its initial year, an integrated management course and an integrated law course, both of five years each, were started and now, the officials plan to begin a Railway Research Centre-related course too.

The current building has 13 classrooms, which are sufficient for the courses conducted and hence they have approved a tender for a hostel to be build adjacent to the building.

"We have received a Rs10 crore approval for a hostel and shall conduct the bhoomi poojan soon. The state will be introducing a course in Ratnagiri, which will be replicated here also from the academic year 2016 as we have started processing the formalities related to it. The course will be a technical course that will be needed to work in the Railways Research Centre," said Mahadev Jagtap, senate member, Mumbai University.

As per the plan, there will be 72 rooms in the hostel made for girls and later, they will add more storeys to the existing structure as it has a provision of turning it into an eight-storey building. The branch is yet to receive computers for their laboratory however, the construction work at the Kalyan subcentre is also underway.

"Although we are glad that the subcentre has been operational, it is not of much use as the main operations still take place at the Kalina campus. So, in case of completing any formalities, we need to travel there," said Kinjal Patil, resident of Thane and MU student.

The officials are also planning for a separate administration wing, which will be based on the lines of the Kalina campus and all operations of the colleges in Thane will be handled here.
