Amitabh Bachchan was the first Bollywood actor to charge Rs 1 crore per film, however, even before him there was an actor who actually started this trend. He is now a superstar despite having only 1 hit in last five years.
The actor we are talking about was once the highest-paid actor in Indian cinema and was considered 'bigger than Amitabh Bachchan'. Even today he rules the hearts of the audience and is richer than superstars like Rajinikanth, Prabhas, and more. He is none other than Chiranjeevi.
Chiranjeevi started his film journey in the early 80s and established himself as a star with masala entertainers. In the 90s, he gave back-to-back superhits and became the top hero in Telugu cinema. This earned him the title of Megastar.
In September 1992, Stardust magazine carried a cover story on Chiranjeevi with the headline: ‘Bigger than Bachchan’. This might be a bold claim, however, wasn't inaccurate in any terms. At that time, Chiranjeevi had just become the highest-paid actor in India, charging a whopping Rs 1.25 crore for the Telugu film Aapadbandhavudu. This made him the first Indian actor to earn Rs 1 crore or more for a single film. Even Amitabh Bachchan, the king of the box office, was charging under Rs 90 lakh per film at the time.
Over the years, Chiranjeevi has impressed fans with his hits and blockbusters like Khaidi, Gharana Mogudu, and more. The actor earned a loyal and huge fan base that even when he left films in 2008 and made a comeback to screens, his films were still loved by the audience. However, since 2019, Chiranjeevi has had only one hit, Waltair Veerayya, and rest all of his films failed to impress the audience.
However, he is still the richest actor in South India after Nagarjuna. According to Financial Express, Chiranjeevi has a whopping net worth of Rs 1650 crore. This makes him richer than Prabhas (Rs 240 crore), Ram Charan (Rs 1350 crore), Rajinikanth (Rs 430 crore), and Kamal Haasan (Rs 450 crore). He lives a luxurious life and even his son Ram Charan and his brother Pawan Kalyan are pan-India superstars.
