The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to start a mother-and-child hospital and more maternity homes in the western suburbs after carrying out a population survey.

There is only one hospital, Wadia Hospital in Parel, and 27
maternity homes offering medical services to women and children in the area.

“The BMC is planning its first mother-and-child hospital at Magathane in Borivli,” Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner, said. “The hospital will have 60 beds — 15 for mothers, 15 for patients with gynaecological problems, 15 for pediatric and 15 for neonatal.”

Mhaiskar said that executive health officer will carry out the survey. Keeping in mind the population, the health of the population and their requirements, the BMC will start work on other maternity homes in the western suburbs.

“A building has been already constructed in Borivli. Now, doctors and other hospital staff are being recruited,” Mhaiskar said.
The BMC is also going to reconstruct Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli. The civic body plans to add 180 more beds to the 120-bed hospital.

The civic body is also planning to construct a hospital on public-private-partnership (PPP) basis in Marol. “It will have 300 beds. The BMC will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Seven Hill Hospital,” said Mhaiskar.
