The central government has assured MMRDA of financial assistance.

Asking the authority to push the project, the Centre said it can provide the much-needed fund through medium such as the World Bank.

In a recent meeting held between officials from the state government and the Centre’s department of urban development (UDD), the central government officials said that the authority needs to take ahead the project aggressively.

“The Centre has taken the BRTS project very seriously. When we gave them a presentation about various ongoing projects of MMRDA, a specific inquiry was made about the progress of BRTS.
“When we told them that it is difficult to pump in funds (approximately Rs1,300 crore) for the project, they assured us financial help through the World Bank,” said metropolitan commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad.

He added that the UDD officials also asked the authority put fresh proposals to take the project ahead.

Gaikwad strongly denied the allegation that the authority had been neglecting the project.

“We were never the implementing authority for the project. We were asked to carry out a feasibility study, which we did and submitted the report to the implementing authority —BEST,” said Gaikwad.

According to Gaikwad, the World Bank has always shown keen interest in implementing BRTS.

“During implementation of the Mumbai Urban Transit Project (MUTP), World Bank officials had opined that Mumbai badly needs
a BRTS. With the Centre’s assurance for funds, we are now optimistic of implementing the project fast,” said Gaikwad.

Now the authority will be sending a fresh proposal to the Centre of three feasible routes of BRTS: One from Sion to Thane on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), the second from Bandra to Dahisar on the Western Express Highway (WEH), and the third on the newly-constructed Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR).
