Conceding that China's Navy is much larger than India's, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta today said "larger does not mean better". Admiral Mehta had recently said that China was likely to be more assertive in its claims in the neighbourhood, and
called for countering its space and cyber-warfare capabilities.

"Instead of taking one line, look at the full thing. The context in which I had said [that] was 'Yes' they [China] have [a] much larger Navy. Larger does not mean it is better," Admiral Mehta said on board the INS Tabar in Mumbai.

"It's not like they have 10 ships and I will have 10 ships. Maybe I have ships which can do a better job than someone else's. So I had said that we need to get smarter, rather than working up on increasing the strength and numbers to match with someone," he said.

On prime minister Manmohan Singh's statement on Monday that there was a terror
threat to India, Admiral Mehta said, "No doubt, coast is vulnerable. Adequate measures have been taken to ensure safety."

On the ports set up by Sri Lanka and Pakistan with the help of China, he said, "Like we take steps to protect ourselves from any harm, other nations [are] also doing the same thing keeping in view their national interests."

In the aftermath of the November 26 terror attacks in Mumbai, a joint operation centre has been set up in the metropolis, Admiral Mehta said. "The Centre has got representatives working in the maritime domain. It also includes Coast Guard, Customs and police officials."

A number of warships are operating to provide protection to Indian ships against piracy, the Navy chief said. "We will soon have a big aircraft carrier for maritime domain
awareness in Indian Ocean," he said, adding "a network-centric operation for better coordination and to obtain updated information will be set up soon. It would help to tackle any threat," he said.
