The rural development department has devised a three-year plan to grow nearly 6.5 crore trees in rural Maharashtra with provision of Rs1,326 crore to motivate villagers for the cause.

Rural development department minister Jayant Patil’s theory is convincing.

He says that if a person breathes 15kg of oxygen in his lifetime, he consumes oxygen generated by seven trees.

Hence, people should plant at least one tree and ensure its survival. With 6.5 crore population living in rural areas, at least that many trees should be planted to combat the global warming, he said.

Villages planting trees 50% of its total population will be entitled to aid ranging between Rs2 lakh and Rs10 lakh.
