In a brazen example of working on the diktats of private developers, BMC has sanctioned over 76% of the the multi level car parking space in the Lower Parel and Dadar area.
Out of the recommended proposal of creating parking space for 25,000 vehicles in the city, 19,000 has been sanctioned at G-south (Lower Parel) and G-north (Dadar) ward.

Private developers have been roped in to construct parking lots on the plots owned by them. According to the latest records, no multi-storey public parking proposal has been sanctioned in South Mumbai. “We ought to receive a proposal from developers or land owners to provide parking amenities. Wards A, B and C haven’t had any proposals to build parking amenities,” said a senior civic official, on condition of anonymity.

In a haphazard move, out of the 68 recommended proposals 34 are passed. All this has been approved in just six wards.
“The BMC is blatantly favouring private land owners. Car parking proposals are blindly being sanctioned without any surveillance or survey determining the requirement of parking space,” said Manoj Kotak, civic improvement’s committee chairman.
Another official said the BMC has stalled a Rs400-crore project of six multi-level car parking in South Mumbai.

The committee has also planned that no vehicles can be parked within 500 metres of the distance of the multi-storey car parking. Skewed development of the proposal  has also left citizens distressed. “Should we park our cars at Lower Parel and then move to and fro from there?” questioned Dr Sunil Menon, a Colaba resident.

However, the civic officials denied any move of favouring developers. Additional municipal commissioner, Aseem Gupta said, “We can’t demand a proposal from land owners or developers to build car parking at a specific area but there have been cases when we have suggested changes in the proposal. Question of favouring any builder does not arise.”
