One dies in building collapse in Mumbai

One person was killed when a building collapsed this morning at suburban Ghatkopar, fire officials said.

The two-floor residential building 'Shakuntala' was declared under the dilapidated category by the municipal corporation a few years ago.

"The building was empty, except for one family which continued to reside there despite several eviction notices. One member of the family, Dattaram Jhadav, 28, died in the collapse," a fire official said.

Work to remove the rubble was on, he said.
